The Discussion of Dilemmas for the Promotion of Competence and Moral Values in the School Environment

Abstract

This chapter aims to explore the relationship between dilemma discussions and the cultivation of moral competence and values within the school setting. We will begin by delving into the significance of Lawrence Kohlberg’s life and scholarly contributions, highlighting his role in advancing Jean Piaget’s research. Our discussion will encompass Kohlberg’s view of the individual as an active participant in the moral development process, as well as his pivotal contributions to the field of Moral Psychology. We will also delve into Kohlberg’s articulation of the six-stage, three-level framework, spanning from pre-conventional to conventional and post-conventional, which delineates the progression of moral judgment from childhood to adulthood. Additionally, we will spotlight the factors that both Kohlberg and Lind took into account when conceptualizing moral dilemma discussions as a means to effectively foster the development of moral competence. Lastly, we will examine the impact of the school environment on the cultivation of moral competence and values among students.
