This paper shows the evolution of light bulbs, in general, since the invention of the lamp of Thomas Edison to the discoveries of Nick Holonyak Jr, with the first LED lamps. Presents the technologies used for the lamps in external lighting systems, highlighting the use of LED luminaires and the benefits they bring with them, such as being more energy efficient. It can also, be realized that, LED technology is not yet widely used because of the initial investment that must be made. A case of study was carried out in the parking lot of an enterprise in a neighboring city (retrofit of existing luminaires by LED luminaires), to demonstrate the benefits of using such technology and in the same way to show the values contributed and in how much time, the investment would be recovered

Neste trabalho aborda-se a evolução das lâmpadas de uma maneira geral, desde a invenção da lâmpada de Thomas Edison até as descobertas de Nick Holonyak Jr, com as primeiras lâmpadas LED. Apresenta-se as tecnologias empregadas às lâmpadas utilizadas nos sistemas de iluminação externos, dando destaque a utilização de luminárias LED e os benefícios que as mesmas trazem consigo, como o fato de serem mais eficientes energeticamente. Também pode-se perceber que a tecnologia LED ainda não é muito utilizada por causa do investimento inicial que deve ser feito. Um estudo de caso foi realizado, no estacionamento de um empreendimento em uma cidade vizinha (retrofit das luminárias existentes por luminárias LED), para demonstrar os benefícios de se utilizar tal tecnologia e da mesma forma mostrar os valores aportados e em quanto tempo, o investimento inicial seria recuperado
