Resumo
The aorta is the largest artery in the human body. Generally, in healthy adults, its diameter does not exceed 4 cm. There is a normal increase in diameter during life (0.9 mm every decade for men and 0.7 mm for women). Anatomically, it is divided into thoracic (ascending, arch, descending) and abdominal aorta. It is responsible for transporting about 200 million liters of blood during the entire life of a human being (Fig. 62.1).
