Abstract
Abstract (english)
The present investigation aims to understand the lived experiences and learning processes of adult individuals within the context of a digital gaming community. It seeks to answer the following research question: Is it possible to observe the construction of diverse forms of knowledge in digital gaming communities through dialogue with their members? The theoretical framework adopts the perspective of Ethnomathematics, through which digital games and their communities are understood as an ethno, capable of producing knowledge and sharing their own forms of learning. To this end, five semi-structured, dialogical interviews were conducted with female and male players who are students at São Paulo State University (Unesp/Rio Claro) and competitors in League of Legends from the Ayrton Senna da Silva Academic Athletic Association (Atlética de Rio Claro). In addition to the interviews, dialogue with the community and perceptions of it were developed through an ethnographic approach, which enabled the experience and recognition of ways of interacting and sharing knowledge within the community context. The researcher’s own experiences as a player were also incorporated into the analytical process. Thus, based on the analysis of the interviews and the researcher’s immersion, the discussions pointed to the following themes: the interviewees’ profiles and their first contacts with the community; how participation and interaction in these communities are manifested, through discussions of practices and experiences; and possibilities for learning and knowledge within the community as understood by the interviewees. In addition, other issues such as access, prejudice, and discrimination emerged. Finally, the possibilities for using digital games in the context of formal education are outline.
