Este artigo analisa a vida e a obra da filósofa e feminista do século XIX, Harriet Taylor Mill (1807–1858), cuja produção intelectual foi historicamente ofuscada pela figura de seu marido, John Stuart Mill. O objetivo é estabelecer a relação intrínseca entre sua trajetória biográfica e suas ideias filosóficas, utilizando como base as fontes disponíveis em português. A metodologia adotada é a de revisão bibliográfica. A análise está estruturada em três eixos principais: primeiro, examina-se a sua vida como um manifesto político contra as convenções da Era Vitoriana; segundo, aprofunda-se o seu pensamento radical sobre igualdade, cidadania e educação; e, por fim, discute-se a complexa parceria intelectual com John Stuart Mill como a chave para compreender tanto sua colaboração quanto seu posterior apagamento histórico. Conclui-se que reconhecer a indissociabilidade entre a vida e a obra de Taylor Mill é um ato de justiça histórica e essencial para uma compreensão mais completa da tradição liberal e feminista.
Abstract (english)
This article analyzes the life and work of 19th-century philosopher and feminist Harriet Taylor Mill (1807–1858), whose intellectual contributions were historically overshadowed by her husband, John Stuart Mill. The aim is to establish the intrinsic relationship between her biographical trajectory and her philosophical ideas, based on sources available in Portuguese. The methodology adopted is a bibliographic review. The analysis is structured around three main axes: first, her life is examined as a political statement against the conventions of the Victorian Era; second, her radical thought on equality, citizenship, and education is explored; finally, her complex intellectual partnership with John Stuart Mill is discussed as key to understanding both her collaboration and her subsequent historical erasure. The article concludes that acknowledging the inseparability between Taylor Mill’s life and work is an act of historical justice and essential for a more comprehensive understanding of liberal and feminist traditions.
