Abstract
ABSTRACT Sutures are the main tissue approximation technique used in surgical procedures. However, they are operator‐dependent and susceptible to inflammatory reactions. In this context, surgical bioadhesives have been developed with the aim of replacing sutures or acting as a complementary protection to them. To fulfill these purposes, bioadhesives need to have specific structural characteristics, such as good tissue adhesion, the ability to aid the healing process without releasing toxic substances or altering the wound microenvironment. Soybean oil stands out as a promising material for the development of bioadhesives due to its favorable structural properties and low cost, which makes its use economically viable. The aim of this study was to develop a bioadhesive based on commercial soybean oil so that it can be used to reinforce sutures or as a tissue bonding agent. The bioadhesive was characterized by FTIR, 1 H NMR, rheological analysis, curing time, water absorption, hydrolytic degradation and cytotoxicity. The bioadhesive exhibited 69–80 s curing time, easy handling and malleability, transparency, and low toxicity, with cell viability of approximately 91% after 24 h of exposure to the PolyOSEA film extract. These results show its bioadhesive potential to be used in the healing process of surgical wounds or further biomedical applications.
