Tradução digital: treebanking e alinhamento de Sobre o Inacreditável de Heráclito

Abstract

O trabalho tem por objetivo elaborar uma tradução digital manual, isto é, uma tradução elaborada manualmente e publicada no meio digital, correspondente a 31 capítulos da obra Perí Apíston (lit. Sobre o Inacreditável), do paradoxógrafo Heráclito (II d.C.). Essa tradução é feita manualmente com o apoio de dois suportes digitais: o treebank, também chamado de árvore sintática de dependências, que possibilita uma anotação dinâmica do nível morfológico, sintático e semântico do corpus linguístico; e o alinhamento de tradução, no nível da palavra, no qual o texto grego é alinhado à tradução para se verificar as correspondências entre as suas palavras. A partir de alinhamentos multilíngues, também propõe-se realizar uma comparação entre a tradução elaborada e traduções de outros autores (Pereira, 2016a; Stern, 2003; Guerra, 2009) que não utilizam os suportes digitais, de modo a averiguar quais são as suas diferenças e quais são as contribuições dessas ferramentas à tradução do texto antigo. O manuseio do treebank é fundamentado nos guias AGDT 1 (Bamman; Crane, 2008) e AGDT 2 (Celano, 2014), enquanto os alinhamentos seguem os critérios brasileiros de alinhamento de Ferreira e Reis (2022). As discussões acerca da tradução e do suporte digital baseiam-se em pesquisadores da área das Humanidades Digitais, como Yousef et al. (2022), Almas e Beaulieu (2016) e Palladino, Shamsian e Yousef (2022b), e em conceitos dos estudos da tradução, como a equivalência e a traduzibilidade nos trabalhos de Baker (1992) e de Pedro (1999). A partir dos suportes digitais, notou-se que as traduções tendem a se distinguir particularmente quando há ambiguidade gerada por conjugações verbais, como o particípio, mudança da classe de palavra, adaptações de estruturas sintáticas, acréscimos de palavras nas traduções e apagamentos de palavras da língua fonte. Além disso, os alinhamentos multilíngues revelaram que a classificação dos pares (1-1, 1-N, N-1, N-N) pode funcionar como um indicador de traduções e equivalências diferentes. Sugere-se que o suporte digital auxilie o tradutor a identificar as diferenças entre as traduções e a obter um melhor entendimento do texto grego para tomar as suas próprias decisões de tradução.

This work aims to write a manual digital translation – that is, a translation written by hand and published on the web – of 31 chapters from the book Perí Apíston (On Unbelievable Things), by Heraclitus the Paradoxographer (2nd century AD). This translation is done manually with the support of two digital tools: the treebank, also known as a syntactic dependency tree, which enables a dynamic annotation of the morphological, syntactic, and semantic levels of the text corpus; and the translation alignment at word level, in which the Greek text is aligned with the translation to verify correspondences between their words. Based on multilingual alignments, we also propose a comparison between our translation and other authors’ translations (Pereira, 2016a; Stern, 2003; Guerra, 2009) that do not use digital tools, in order to identify their differences and assess the contributions of these tools to the translation of ancient texts. The treebank usage is based on the guidelines called AGDT 1 (Bamman; Crane, 2008) and AGDT 2 (Celano, 2014), and the alignments follow the Brazilian alignment criteria established by Ferreira and Reis (2022). Discussions regarding translation and digital tools are inspired by researchers from the field of Digital Humanities, such as Yousef et al. (2022), Almas and Beaulieu (2016), and Palladino, Shamsian and Yousef (2022b), as well as by concepts from translation studies, such as equivalence and translatability explained by Baker (1992) and Pedro (1999). Analyzing the corpus through the digital tools, it was noted that translations tend to differ particularly when ambiguity arises from verb conjugations, such as participles, changes in part of speech, adaptations of syntactic structures, addition of words in the target language and omission of words from the source language. Furthermore, the multilingual alignments revealed that the pair classification (1-1, 1-N, N-1, N-N) can be an indicator of different translations and equivalences. It is suggested that digital tools assist translators in identifying differences between translations and gain a better understanding of Greek texts so that they can make their own translation decisions.
