Expressões da identidade cultural norte-americana no contexto pós-guerras mundiais: tangenciamentos entre The sun also rises (1926), de Ernest Hemingway e And the hippos were boiled in their tanks (2008), de William S. Burroughs e Jack Kerouac

Abstract

A presente dissertação apresenta um estudo comparativo entre os romances The Sun Also Rises (1926), de Ernest Hemingway, e And The Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks (2008), de William S. Burroughs e Jack Keroauc a fim de estudar alguns conceitos da representação da identidade cultural americana no período pós-Guerras Mundiais. Para tanto, estabelecemos três eixos temáticos de análise. Primeiro, tecemos considerações acerca dos procedimentos estéticos das obras propostos por Baker (1974) e Lins (1964) e se há alguma similaridade na construção das narrativas. Em seguida, buscamos contextualizar as gerações literárias, a Lost Generation e a Beat Generation, e sua relação com o período histórico do pós-Guerras Mundiais, baseados respectivamente em Hoffman (1962) e Willer (2009). Nesse sentido, buscamos justificar nossa análise trazendo um estudo sistemático sobre o gênero dos romances, conforme Kuo (2012) para assim, verificarmos como são explorados os conceitos de coragem, moralidade e trauma. Por fim, trazemos uma proposta sobre uma possível releitura dos temas da individualidade e da moralidade sob a ótica Transcendentalista, apoiados em Spangler (2008) e Dooley (2015), e como estaria relacionada a uma reação ao Puritanismo americano crescente nos dois períodos históricos apontados.

This work presents a comparative study between the novels The Sun Also Rises (1926) by Errnest Hemingway, and And the Hippos were Boiled in Their Tanks (2008) by William S. Burroughs and Jack Keroauc. We establish three main thematic branches in order to analyze selected concepts on American cultural identity concerning the post-World Wars period. Initially, we explore the novels´ aesthetic aspects as proposed by Baker (1974) and Lins (1964) for similarities in the narrative structures. Next we contextualize the Lost and Beat Generations and their relation to the post-World Wars period based on Hoffman (1962) and Willer (2009). We justify our analyses by creating a systematic reading of both novels´ genre, according to Kuo (2012) to verify how concepts of courage, morality, and trauma are discussed. Finally, we suggest a rereading of the themes about individuality and morality under the scope of Transcendentalism, as discussed by Spangler (2008) and Dooley (2015), and how they relate to the growing American Puritanism in both periods.
