Abstract

Viola x wittrockiana (pansy flower) is a cross breed plant for ornamentation, kitchen use and pharmaceutical industry. Seeds were soaked in three concentrations (5, 10 and 20 mg.L-1) of gibberellic acid (GA3) for four different periods (30, 60, 120 and 180 min) to analyze the acid's influence on the germination of pansy seeds. After treatments, the plates were maintained in a germination chamber (BOD) at 25°C ± 2 and under white light of fluorescent lamps at 116 μmol.m-2.s-1, with a 12-h photoperiod. Data from daily monitoring were employed for calculating germination capacity, ermination speed index and average germination time. The best treatment for germination capacity and average germination time was concentration 5 mg.L-1 during 30 min. exposure and the best germination speed indexes occurred at 180 minutes exposure in all GA3 concentrations.
