Resumo

This chapter discusses the purposes of the chemical restraint, and presents the concerns and facts to consider before sedation or tranquilization. The use of a halter and lead rope is essential for the proper positioning and control of the head of the animal during administration of medication. In case of restless, stressed or aggressive horses, it may be necessary to use a twitch or another physical restraint method. Depending on the procedure to be performed, it is preferable to place the horse into a stock for physical containment prior to administration of sedatives or tranquilizers. Based on the demeanor, characteristics, and clinical status of the patient, as well as the indications for the chemical restraint. Accurate calculation is a very important step in ensuring the administration of the correct dose to the patient, avoiding overdose and reducing the risks of adverse effects.
