Marcas do "novo gótico americano" em Sempre Vivemos no Castelo (1962), de Shirley Jackson

Abstract

Nesta pesquisa identificamos e analisamos as marcas do chamado “Novo Gótico Americano” na obra Sempre Vivemos no Castelo (1962), da escritora americana Shirley Jackson (1916-1965). Além de procurar identificar as marcas do novo gótico presente no referido romance, procuramos demonstrar que, embora seja herdeiro das produções góticas inglesas, geralmente fundadas no terror físico e no horror social, o gótico americano se diferencia daquele por centrar sua escrita no terror mental e no horror moral, segundo Frederick Frank (1968), especialmente por captar a irracionalidade e o caos de uma época ao desvelar o dark side da psique americana. Shirley Jackson escreveu diversas obras nas quais podemos encontrar elementos góticos, quase sempre histórias que, a priori, podem parecer algo do cotidiano de qualquer família americana da época. Mas esta obra surge particularmente quando Jackson havia retomado a escrita de romances, dando total ênfase ao papel da mulher na sociedade patriarcal do início dos anos 1960 na cultura dos Estados Unidos da América. Esta obra mostra, através dos elementos góticos, o que a dominação e alienação patriarcal podem fazer às mulheres.

In this research we identified and enumerated the marks of the so-called “New American Gothic” in the work We have always lived in the Castle (1962), by American writer Shirley Jackson (1916-1965). In addition to trying to identify the marks of the new gothic present in that novel, we will try to demonstrate that, although the work is heir to English Gothic productions, generally founded on physical terror and social horror, the American Gothic is different from that for centering his writing on mental and in moral horror, according to Frederick Frank (1968), especially for capturing the irrationality and chaos of an era by unveiling the dark side of the American psyche. Shirley Jackson wrote several works where we can find gothic elements, almost always stories that at first glance may seem like something from any American family of the time. But this work particularly arises when Jackson had resumed writing novels, placing full emphasis on the role of women in the patriarchal society of the early 1960s in US culture. This work shows through Gothic elements what patriarchal domination and alienation can do to women.
