Resumo
The first case of swine cryptosporidiosis were reported in 1977. Since then, four species of Cryptosporidium (C. parvum, C. hominis, C. suis, C. muris) and three genotypes (Cryptosporidium pig genotype II, rodents genotype I and Cryptosporidium sp. Eire w65.5) are considered infectious to pigs. Of these, the most prevalent in pigs are C. suis and Cryptosporidium pig genotype II. In this chapter, we will discuss the importance (zoonotic aspects), history, etiology, epidemiology, clinical aspects, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and control of cryptosporidiosis in pigs. Recent work and obtained results will be highlighted, as well as the worldwide distribution of swine cryptosporidiosis.
