Aniceto dos Reis Gonçalves Viana (1840 - 1914): o linguista em seu tempo

Abstract

Esta tese é um estudo historiográfico sobre Aniceto dos Reis Gonçalves Viana (1840-1914). O objetivo principal deste trabalho é analisar as ideias linguísticas do foneticista por meio de investigação biográfica e bibliográfica (biobibliográfica) e das seguintes obras de fonética e de fonologia do autor: Essai de phonétique et de phonologie de la langue portugaise d'après le dialecte actuel de Lisbonne (1883) e a Exposição da Pronúncia Normal Portuguesa para uso de Nacionais e Estrangeiros (1892). Essas obras reúnem a descrição dialetal minuciosa do português do eixo Lisboa-Coimbra do século XIX. Este estudo dialetal de A. R. Gonçalves Viana utilizou o método da incipiente Fonética europeia do século XIX. Nesta tese, aspectos históricos sobre a situação social portuguesa desse século e a vida do autor foram investigados em Portugal. Essas considerações históricas e biográficas contribuíram para a compreensão do pensamento linguístico de A. R. Gonçalves Viana. Traduzimos a obra Essai de phonétique et de phonologie... (1883) para o português e inserimos cartas inéditas do autor na parte biográfica desta tese. Esta pesquisa é de natureza descritivo-interpretativa, circunscrita na disciplina da Historiografia Linguística (Koerner (2014; 1995); Swiggers (1997)). Nesta tese buscou-se contribuir com estudos para a história da fonética, da fonologia e da Historiografia da Língua Portuguesa. A motivação deste estudo foi devida à observação da pouca quantidade de trabalhos acadêmicos (detalhados) sobre A. R. Gonçalves Viana, principalmente em relação às obras de fonética e de fonologia. Assim, esta pesquisa buscou contribuir com estudos historiográficos atualizando a discussão acerca da importância de A. R. Gonçalves Viana aos estudos linguísticos.

This thesis is a historiographical study about Aniceto dos Reis Gonçalves Viana (1840- 1914). The main objective of this study is to analyze the phonetician’s linguistic ideas through biographical and bibliographical (biobibliographical) research with the author’s phonetic and phonological works, in particular with reference to: Essai de phonétique et de phonologie de la langue portugaise d'après le dialecte actuel de Lisbonne (1883) and Exposição da Pronúncia Normal Portuguesa para uso de Nacionais e Estrangeiros (1892). These works bring together the detailed description of the Portuguese dialect of the Lisbon-Coimbra axis at the end of the nineteenth century. These dialectal studies of A. R. Gonçalves Viana were based on using the methods of the incipient European nineteenth century Phonetics. In this thesis, historical aspects about the social situation of that century and the author’s life were well investigated in Portugal. These historical and geographical considerations aimed to contribute to the understanding of the linguistic thinking of A. R. Gonçalves Viana. I have translated Essai de phonétique et de phonologie... (1883) into Portuguese and I have inserted unpublished letters of the author in the biographical part of the text. The thesis is a descriptive-interpretative research, circumscribed in the area of the Historiography of Linguistics (Koerner 2014, 1995; Swiggers, 1997). It aimed to contribute to the history of Phonetics, Phonology and Historiography of the Portuguese language studies. The motivation of this study was due to the observation of a small amount of academic studies on A. R. Gonçalves Viana’s phonological and phonetic works, updating his importance in the history of Linguistics and Phonetics.
