Tom Bombadil: mistério irredutível

Abstract

A presente tese de Doutorado Direto desenvolve uma leitura sobre a personagem Tom Bombadil, disposta no legendarium de J. R. R. Tolkien, evidenciando o mistério inerente ao seu ser. Nesse contexto, a pesquisa não intenta solucionar o mistério que é a própria personagem, mas contemplá-la e circunscrevê-la enquanto tal, demonstrando que os aspectos envolvidos em sua construção a fazem ser mistério, ou seja, trata-se de uma criação não solucionável. Para tal, analisamos, inicialmente, as manifestações de Tom no universo tolkieniano, presentes em O Senhor dos Anéis (The Lord of the Rings, 1954-1955) — bem como nas notas e rascunhos produzidos durante a elaboração desse romance —, nos poemas de As Aventuras de Tom Bombadil (The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, 1962), e nas cartas escritas pelo autor, presentes em As Cartas de J. R. R. Tolkien (The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien, 1981). A partir desse resgate analítico, apresentam-se as diferentes leituras já propostas a respeito da personagem, desenvolvidas por críticos especializados e fãs, nos mais diferentes meios de divulgação — livros, capítulos, dissertações, artigos, sites e blogs. Ademais, são abordados os aspectos que se sobressaltam na composição da personagem, quais sejam: sua relação com os elementos da Natureza, especialmente o ar e o fogo; sua fala musical, através da qual a personagem exerce seu poder mágico; e sua relação elementar, misteriosa e mística com Fruta d’Ouro. Além disso, destaca-se a cena na qual Bombadil detém o Um Anel em suas mãos, sendo essa uma das mais intrigantes e controversas de toda a mitologia tolkieniana. Por fim, constatamos que não é possível conhecer a origem da personagem, o que mantém sua essência oculta, salvaguardando seu ser-mistério. Portanto, por meio de investigações teórico-críticas advindas dos campos da Filosofia, da Psicologia junguiana e da Teoria Literária, problematizamos Tom Bombadil como mistério em si mesmo, como manifestação do mistério, aquele mistério presente em toda mitologia, em toda religião: o mistério irredutível.

This Direct Doctorate thesis develops an interpretation of the character Tom Bombadil, included in J. R. R. Tolkien’s legendarium, emphasizing the mystery inherent in its being. With this in mind, this project doesn’t intend to solve the character mystery but to contemplate and circumscribe it in this way, showing that the aspects used in its formation make it a mystery; in other words, it is an unresolvable creation. For this purpose, we analyzed manifestations of Tom in the Tolkienian universe, present in The Lord of the Rings (1954-1955) — as well as in the notes and drafts produced during the elaboration of this novel —, in the poems of The Adventures of Tom Bombadil (1962), and also in the letters written by the author, present in The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien (1981). From this analytical recovery, different readings already proposed about the character are presented, developed by specialized critics and fans, in several means of dissemination — books, chapters, dissertations, articles, websites, and blogs. Furthermore, highlighted aspects in the character's composition are addressed: its relationship with elements of Nature, especially air and fire; its musical speech, through which the character exerts its magical power; and its elemental, mysterious, and mystical relationship with Goldberry. In addition, the scene in which Bombadil holds the One Ring in its hands is one of the most intriguing and controversial of whole Tolkienian mythology. Finally, we observe the impossibility of knowing the character’s origin, which keeps its essence hidden, safeguarding its mystery-being. Thus, through theoretical-critical investigations arising from Philosophy, Jungian Psychology, and Literary Theory, we problematize Tom Bombadil as a mystery in itself, as a manifestation of the mystery, which mystery present in all mythology, in all religion: the irreducible mystery.
