A inter-relação de sensações para a produção do conhecimento em torno da Carta sobre os cegos, de Denis Diderot

Abstract

O objetivo do trabalho é investigar se Denis Diderot defende a inter-relação dos sentidos, em especial a visão e o tato, na sua Carta sobre os Cegos para Uso dos que Veem. Para isso, tentamos investigar a gênese progressiva das discussões debatidas na obra, o que nos levou a estudar a polêmica sobre o problema de Molyneux, que teve início com John Locke em seu Ensaio sobre o EntendimentoHumano. O problema resume-se à seguinte indagação: um cego de nascença que tenha aprendido a diferenciar pelo tato as formas de uma esfera e de um cubo, ao ter sua visão restituída na idade adulta, iria reconhecer e nomear esses objetos pela visão antes de tocá-los? A discussão se estendeu pela obra de Berkeley e Condillac, até ser sintetizada por Diderot na Carta sobre os Cegos, que explana sobre aquilo que podemos perceber diretamente através dos sentidos, sobre a possibilidade da interação entre os sentidos, sobre o papel que a razão exerce na percepção e sobre a relação entre sensações visuais e táteis na definição das formas, questões que culminam na polêmica sobre a existência do mundo exterior.

The objective in this work is to investigate whether Denis Diderot defends an interrelation of the senses, especially vision and touch, in his Letter on the Blind for the Use of Those Who Can See. For this, we tried to investigate the progressive genesis of the discussions in the work that led us to study the controversy over the Molyneux problem, which began with John Locke in his An Essay Concerning Human Understanding. The problem boils down to the following question: would a born blind who has learned by touch the difference between the shape of a sphere and a cube, havinghis sight restored at adult age, recognize and name these objects by sight before touching them? The discussion extended through the work of Berkeley and Condillac, until it was synthesized by Diderot in the Letter on the Blind, which explains about what we can perceive directly through the senses, about the possibility of interaction between the senses, about the role that reason plays in perception and about the relation between visual and touch sensations on the definitions of the forms, issues which culminate in the controversy over the existence of the external world.
