Resumo
This study provides an analysis of the environmental impacts caused by illegal mining activities in the Nambikwara Indigenous Lands in the hydrographical basin of the Sarare River, a tributary of the Guapore River, in the municipality of Pontes e Lacerda, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The study was conducted in two distinct periods, May 2020 and May 2022, during Operacao Verde Brasil (Operation Green Brazil). Initially, a bibliographic and documentary research on the subject was carried out. Also, fieldwork was carried out during operations by Brazilian Border Army Jauru/66th Motorized Infantry Battalion in 2020. Subsequently, secondary data were collected, systematized and analyzed, along with the primary data collected in fieldwork. The fact that some regions of the state of Mato Grosso have their economy associated with the mineral sector and have large mineral reserves has attracted several miners to the municipality of Pontes e Lacerda. In view of that, the Sarare region became a focus of exploration. Consequently, the hydrographical basin has been degraded by illegal mining, with direct impacts on its river channels. Clearance of vegetation cover and removal of soil and sediments, which are then indiscriminately deposited along riverbanks, were also identified. Thus, it is concluded that this is an exploitation without any management plan or recovery plan for the impacted areas, and that the specific environmental impacts become diffuse due to the very dynamics of the river channels via the system's connectivity.
