Abstract
Between the 1920s and 1980s, jazz began and consolidated its presence in Brazilian musical culture. Despite the intense disputes and contradictions in this trajectory, it is possible to identify a common thread: the presence of a multifaceted nationalism that imposed, to a greater or lesser degree, barriers to the reception of jazz in Brazil. Thus, the purpose of this article is to verify what would be the main permanences and ruptures of this process, which coincides with the period of long modernism (1920 - 1980) described by Napolitano (2014). The purpose is not to cite the totality of jazz experiences in Brazil, which would be impossible. In this article, we aim to make a historical and bibliographical balance about the presence of jazz in Brazilian popular music and reflect on the possible indications of the coadjuvant place of instrumental music in much of the memory and historiography.
