Renal function and electrolyte levels (sodium and potassium) were studied in 20 dogs under ketamine anesthesia. Venous and arterial blood pressure, cardiac rate and renal histopathology were also studied. The following data were recorded (2 hr before and 2 hr after anesthesia): urinary volume and osmolarity; clearance of creatine, sodium, potassium, free water, paraaminohippurate, and urine sodium:potassium ratio, sodium and potassium urinary excretion, and plasma sodium and potassium reuptake. A decrease in plasma sodium and potassium was found as well as a decrease in diuresis, and it is concluded that renal function is not affected by ketamine.en
