A prosa poética na obra de Kate Chopin

Abstract

Antes de se tornar escritora, a jovem Katherine O’Flahert já escrevia poemas e partituras musicais. Como exímia pianista e leitora, através de seu dom artístico, a autora criava, ao mesmo tempo, versos e músicas, cuja paleta verbal consagra-se em uma escrita artística, que se manifesta em prosa e poesia. Apesar da notável predileção por poemas, Kate Chopin enveredou pelo caminho da ficção como uma forma de sobrevivência, diante da inexpressiva receptividade de seus textos poéticos e pelo interesse das revistas e das editoras de Saint Louis por suas narrativas. Como uma estratégia de compor histórias marcadamente líricas que rompem as fronteiras entre os gêneros literários prosa e poesia, Chopin engendra em suas obras uma dupla subversão tanto na forma como no conteúdo. Nesse sentido, a escritora constrói histórias povoadas de símbolos, imagens, metáforas e ironia que representam com poeticidade o despertar do eu feminino e a condição da mulher frente às imposições da sociedade patriarcal do século XIX. Para além de uma pretensão estética, o poético em suas composições literárias não busca enfeitar de lirismo a trajetória de suas heroínas, mas desmascarar a opressão e a hostilidade que marcam a vida real das mulheres de sua época por meio de uma escrita de resistência, como uma das características fulcrais da poesia, gênero esse revolucionário por natureza. Nessa senda, a presente tese de Doutorado almeja analisar a prosa poética na obra de Kate Chopin, evidenciando o caráter inovador e visionário de seu fazer literário, considerando que o gênero híbrido em questão foi teorizado quase um século após a publicação de suas narrativas. Além disso, buscamos situar a autora como precursora da prosa poética em língua inglesa, ocupando um lugar de destaque que a ela foi relegado depois da repercussão negativa da publicação de sua obra-prima e que, atualmente, é ocupado pelos modernistas britânicos, sobretudo por Virginia Woolf, considerada pela crítica como representante deste gênero literário na escrita de autoria feminina. Para tanto, a fundamentação teórica que norteará nossos estudos ancora-se nos postulados de Tadié (1978), Freedman (1963), Lefebve (1980), Valéry (1999), Paz (1982) no que concerne à prosa poética, Gilbert e Gubar (1984), Rich (1972) e Cixous (1976) acerca da escrita feminina e feminista, além de Toth (1976, 1979, 1991, 1993, 1999), Seyersted (1970, 1974, 1980, 1994, 2006), Rossi (2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015), Koloski (1996, 2009, 2019) e Moreira (2003) a respeito da poética de Chopin, dentre outros autores e autoras.

Before she became a writer, the young Katherine O'Flahert was already writing poems and musical scores. As an accomplished pianist and reader, through her artistic gift, the author created verse and music at the same time, whose verbal palette is enshrined in artistic writing, which manifests itself in prose and poetry. Despite her notable predilection for poems, Kate Chopin turned to fiction as a way of surviving, given the inexpressive reception of her poetic texts and the interest of Saint Louis magazines and publishers in her narratives. As a strategy for composing markedly lyrical stories that break down the boundaries between the literary genres of prose and poetry, Chopin engenders a double subversion in both form and content in her works. In this sense, the writer constructs stories full of symbols, images, metaphors and irony that poetically represent the awakening of the feminine self and the condition of women in the face of the impositions of 19th century patriarchal society. Beyond an aesthetic pretension, the poetic in her literary compositions does not seek to embellish the trajectory of her heroines with lyricism, but to unmask the oppression and hostility that marked the real lives of the women of her time through a writing of resistance, as one of the core characteristics of poetry, a genre that is revolutionary by nature. With this in mind, this PhD thesis aims to analyse the prose poetry in Kate Chopin's work, highlighting the innovative and visionary nature of her literary work, considering that the hybrid genre in question was theorized almost a century after the publication of her narratives. In addition, we seek to situate the author as a forerunner of prose poetry in the English language, occupying a place of prominence that was relegated to her after the negative repercussions of the publication of her masterpiece and which is currently occupied by British modernists, especially Virginia Woolf, considered by critics to be the representative of this literary genre in writing by women. To this end, the theoretical foundation that will guide our studies is anchored in the postulates of Tadié (1978), Freedman (1963), Lefebve (1980), Valéry (1999), Paz (1982) with regard to prose poetry, Gilbert and Gubar (1984), Rich (1972) and Cixous (1976) on women's and feminist writing, as well as Toth (1976, 1979, 1991, 1993, 1999), Seyersted (1970, 1974, 1980, 1994, 2006), Rossi (2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015), Koloski (1996, 2009, 2019) and Moreira (2003) on Chopin's poetics, among other authors.
