Resumo
Isolated compounds from natural sources are a rich source of active constituents with multiple pharmacological properties, including intestinal antiinflammatory activity. Chemical secondary metabolites from plants include a plethora of different chemical classes, among which flavonoids, alkaloids, coumarins, curcuminoids, phytosterols, saponins, stilbenes, tannins, and terpenes represent the main chemical classes of active compounds with intestinal antiinflammatory activity. Scientific evidence demonstrated that among the intestinal antiinflammatory secondary metabolites from plants, resveratrol (stilbene), curcumin (curcuminoids), baicalin (flavone), and epigallocatechin gallate (catechin) are the most important products supporting their use in human inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), whereas cyanidin (anthocyanin), quercetin, morin, rutin, and kaempferol (flavonols), bacalein, apigenin, diosmin, luteolin, fisetin, and chrysin (flavones), narigenin (flavanone), daidzein and genistein (isoflavones), β-sitosterol and stigmasterol (phytosterols), gingenoside (saponin), polydatin and pterostilbene (stilbenes), and paenoflorin and limonene (terpenes) are potential compounds for further detailed preclinical studies and clinical trials.
