Esta pesquisa propõe uma reflexão sobre os conceitos de grotesco e sublime na produção da artista estadunidense Cindy Sherman, mais especificamente nas três séries produzidas pela artista entre 1985 e 1992: The fairy tales, Disasters e Sex pictures. Para tanto, esta pesquisa fundamenta-se em autores do campo da psicanálise e da filosofia, partindo de uma investigação sobre a origem daqueles conceitos, buscando relacioná-los às imagens de Sherman, e promovendo uma investigação sobre de que forma a inserção de elementos tidos como abjetos ou repugnantes, podem ser trabalhados numa imagem de modo a despertar ao mesmo tempo, sensações de repulsa e desejo. Mostrou-se necessário para esta pesquisa organizar uma breve contextualização histórica da fotografia, e produzir uma investigação sobre as influências que o suporte fotográfico exerce na obra analisada, sobretudo considerando aspectos desta história que contribuíram para a construção de um entendimento da fotografia como mimese do real.
Abstract (english)
This research proposes a reflection on the concepts of the grotesque and the sublime in the production of the American artist Cindy Sherman, more specifically on the three series produced by the artist between 1985 and 1992: The fairy tales, Disasters and Sex pictures. Thereunto, this research is based on authors in the field of psychoanalysis and philosophy, starting from an investigation on the origin of those concepts, seeking to relate them to Sherman's images, and promoting an investigation into how the insertion of elements as abject or disgusting, can be worked into an image to arouse feelings of repulsion and desire at the same time. It was necessary for this research to organize a brief historical contextualization of photography, and to produce an investigation on the influences that the photographic support exerts on the analyzed work, especially considering aspects of this history that contributed to the construction of an understanding of photography as a mimesis of the real.
