Território, capital financeiro e land grabbing: a multiescalaridade no controle de terras e a produção agrícola pelo fundo de pensão TIAA

Abstract

O início do século XXI marcou a chegada de novos agentes na agricultura mundial. Trata-se da significativa presença e interesse do capital financeiro representado por fundos (pensão, soberanos, hedge, endowments, private equity), corporações (bancos, seguradoras e empresas) e indivíduos de alta renda, sobre os chamados ativos alternativos. Com isso, foi estabelecida uma nova dinâmica de investimentos e produção agrícola para controle e aquisição de terras em escala mundial, configurando o atual fenômeno denominado landgrabbing. Desta maneira, este trabalho pretende analisar as relações entre o fundo de pensão Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA) e as empresas do agronegócio brasileiras utilizadas para garantir o acesso aos mercados de terras regionais e viabilizar o negócio de precificação das terras. Para isto, buscamos compreender tanto as estratégias e formas de controle e acumulação pela terra, quanto identificar suas parcerias e atuação dos intermediários no mercado de terras da produção agrícola moderna.

The beginning of the 21st century marked the arrival of new agents in world agriculture. This is the significant presence and interest of the financial capital represented by funds (pension, sovereigns, hedge, endowments, private equity), corporations (banks, insurance companies) and high-income individuals, over the so-called alternative assets. With this, a new dynamic of investments and agricultural production was established to control and acquire land on a global scale, configuring the current phenomenon called land grabbing. In this way, this research intends to analyze the relations between the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA) pension fund and the Brazilian agribusiness companies used to guarantee access to regional land markets and land pricing business viable. For this, we seek to understand both the strategies and forms of control and accumulation by land, as well as to identify their partnerships and the role of intermediaries in the land market for modern agricultural production.
