A performance comunicacional de O Conto da Aia como acontecimento na disputa por direitos reprodutivos no Brasil

Abstract

A pesquisa aborda a luta por diretos sexuais e reprodutivos no Brasil e a repercussão midiática de protestos feministas como parte da resistência à ofensiva antrigênero. O foco recai sobre as manifestações que mobilizam a estética do seriado O Conto da Aia, como performance comunicacional, para reivindicar direitos reprodutivos, buscando compreender por que essa narrativa é acionada no Brasil, entre 2018 e 2025, e como ela dialoga com cenários nacionais e transnacionais. A metodologia da Análise do Acontecimento permite compreender os protestos como momentos significativos que atualizam a agenda feminista, articulando práticas, discursos e contextos sociopolíticos específicos. O enquadramento jornalístico das manifestações é analisado a partir de três eixos: mídia hegemônica, mídia especializada em gênero e mídia independente, com o objetivo de compreender a construção e a disputa de sentidos em torno desses atos. Em articulação a isso, a pesquisa também analisa a dimensão estético-performática das imagens dos protestos, considerando sua potência comunicativa e política. Com base no feminismo pós-estruturalista e na perspectiva da colonialidade do poder e do gênero, a análise problematiza a articulação entre as estéticas performáticas dos protestos e as dinâmicas locais e globais de poder, cultura e resistência, evidenciando como a narrativa de O Conto da Aia atualiza estratégias feministas no Brasil. Os resultados indicam que a estética de O Conto da Aia opera como uma performance política capaz de condensar debates complexos sobre direitos reprodutivos em uma linguagem visual, estabelecendo conexões simbólicas com uma agenda feminista transnacional e ampliando a visibilidade dessas reivindicações no espaço público. Observa-se também que essa performance leva os veículos midiáticos a explicar o fenômeno e seus significados, contribuindo para ampliar o debate público sobre direitos reprodutivos. Ao mesmo tempo, os enquadramentos midiáticos tendem a permanecer ancorados nas molduras oferecidas pela própria narrativa ficcional, deixando de dar visibilidade a dimensões estruturais que travessam a pauta reprodutiva, como desigualdades de raça e classe.

The research addresses the struggle for sexual and reproductive rights in Brazil and the media coverage of feminist protests as part of the resistance to the anti-gender offensive. It focuses on demonstrations that mobilize the aesthetics of The Handmaid’s Tale as a communicational performance to demand reproductive rights, seeking to understand why this narrative has been invoked in Brazil between 2018 and 2025, and how it dialogues with national and transnational contexts. The methodology of the analysis of the event enables the understanding of protests as significant moments that update the feminist agenda by articulating specific sociopolitical practices, discourses, and contexts. The journalistic framing of these demonstrations is analyzed through three axes: mainstream media, gender-specialized media, and independent media, aiming to understand the construction and the dispute over meanings surrounding these acts. In connection with this, the study also examines the aesthetic-performative dimension of protest imagery, considering its communicative and political power. Grounded in post-structuralist feminism and in the perspective of the coloniality of power and gender, the analysis problematizes the relationship between the performative aesthetics of protests and the local and global dynamics of power, culture, and resistance, demonstrating how the narrative of The Handmaid’s Tale updates feminist strategies in Brazil. The results indicate that the aesthetic of The Handmaid’s Tale operates as a political performance capable of condensing complex debates on reproductive rights into a visual language, establishing symbolic connections with a transnational feminist agenda and increasing the visibility of these claims in the public sphere. It is also observed that this performance leads media outlets to explain the phenomenon and its meanings, thereby contributing to the expansion of public debate on reproductive rights. At the same time, media framings tend to remain anchored in the frameworks provided by the fictional narrative itself, failing to give visibility to structural dimensions that crosscut the reproductive rights agenda, such as inequalities of race and class.
