Gênero e Matemática: o (des)incentivo à participação científica de mulheres na área de Matemática

Abstract

Este estudo investigou a participação de homens e mulheres no Congresso de Iniciação Científica (CIC) da Unesp nos últimos cinco anos, com atenção especial às percepções de estudantes mulheres da Licenciatura em Matemática da Faculdade de Ciências, do campus de Bauru. A pesquisa partiu de dados quantitativos que foram analisados em uma perspectiva estatística com elaboração de três gráficos: o primeiro dedicado à área de Ciências Exatas e da Terra, no qual as oscilações de representatividade feminina se mostraram mais expressivas; o segundo abrangendo todas as modalidades de pesquisa relacionadas à Matemática; e o terceiro composto pelos trabalhos selecionados na primeira fase do CIC. A análise desses dados revelou padrões que, embora muitas vezes invisibilizados no cotidiano acadêmico, evidenciam desigualdades persistentes no acesso e na visibilidade da produção científica feminina. Diante desses resultados, tornou-se fundamental compreender como as próprias estudantes vivenciam esse cenário. Para isso, realizou-se uma etapa qualitativa em que, embora apenas duas alunas tenham aceitado participar, seus relatos trouxeram percepções relevantes sobre pertencimento, trajetórias acadêmicas e desafios enfrentados na Iniciação Científica. Suas experiências revelam tensões entre avanços recentes e obstáculos simbólicos, culturais e institucionais que ainda moldam a presença feminina na área. Ao integrar diferentes abordagens metodológicas, esta pesquisa problematiza não apenas os fatores que contribuem para a continuidade da sub-representação feminina, mas também os elementos que fortalecem a permanência das estudantes, como redes de apoio, mentorias e ambientes acolhedores. Os resultados reforçam a urgência de políticas institucionais que ampliem a equidade de gênero e incentivem novas gerações de mulheres a se reconhecerem como agentes legítimas da Matemática.

This study investigated the participation of men and women in the Scientific Initiation Congress (CIC) of Unesp over the past five years, with particular attention to female students enrolled in the Mathematics Teacher Education program at the School of Sciences, Bauru campus. The research was structured around three analytical graphs: the first focused on the field of Exact and Earth Sciences, where fluctuations in female representation proved most expressive; the second examined all research modalities related to Mathematics; and the third analyzed the works selected in the first stage of the CIC, which advance to the institutional phase and may receive awards. These data reveal patterns that, although often overlooked in academic routines, highlight persistent inequalities in women’s access to and visibility within scientific production.To deepen the understanding of these quantitative findings, a qualitative stage was incorporated. Although only two students agreed to participate, their narratives offered substantive insights into their experiences of belonging, academic trajectories, and the challenges encountered within Scientific Initiation. Their accounts reveal tensions between recent institutional advances and the symbolic, cultural, and structural barriers that continue to shape female participation in the field. By combining quantitative and qualitative approaches, this study highlights not only the factors that sustain the underrepresentation of women but also the elements that strengthen their academic permanence, such as support networks, meaningful mentorship, and welcoming research environments. The results reinforce the urgency of institutional policies that promote gender equity and encourage new generations of women to recognize themselves as legitimate contributors to Mathematics and Science.
