| pt |
| dc.description.abstract | Moral education constitutes a fundamental field for the development of individual autonomy, enabling individuals to critically reflect on norms and values rather than merely assimilating them passively. Within the field of developmental psychology, Jean Piaget made a significant contribution to the understanding of this process by demonstrating that morality is not innate, but progressively constructed through social interactions. From this perspective, Josep Maria Puig expands the discussion by emphasizing that morality is not restricted to the cognitive dimension; rather, it manifests in everyday practice and is learned and consolidated through experience. According to the author, moral education must be grounded in the lived experience of values, ethical reflection, and the active participation of individuals in social contexts that require morally grounded decision-making. This thesis investigates the intersection between moral practices, moral education, and mathematics education, focusing on the use of moral dilemmas as tools for solving mathematical problems within the additive field. The research is based on the premise that mathematics teaching can extend beyond the development of cognitive competencies and also contribute to the ethical and moral formation of students. Through the integration of moral dilemmas into mathematical problems, the study explores how mathematics may serve as an interdisciplinary space for the development of critical thinking, empathy, ethical decision-making, and respectful dialogue. Based on the findings evidenced in the master’s research (Cavalcante, 2021), this study proposes a more in-depth discussion of moral education practices through the resolution of mathematical problems that present moral dilemmas to be collectively discussed. With this purpose, the general objective of this thesis was to examine whether an educational intervention grounded in moral practices, developed through the resolution of mathematical problems embedded in moral contexts, could contribute both to mathematical learning and to the development of moral judgment in children in the second year of Elementary School. Fourteen students from the second year of Elementary School participated in this research. They were enrolled in a private school that adopts an Integral Education approach, understood in this study, as well as in the institution where the research was conducted, as the education of the human being in their entirety, encompassing in an articulated manner the cognitive, social, bodily, cultural, and spiritual dimensions. To achieve this objective, a qualitative action-research design was adopted. The research was organized into three phases, referred to as Phase 1 (pre-intervention), Phase 2 (intervention), and Phase 3 (post-intervention). As data collection instruments, the QI-JM instrument (Martins, 2016) was used in Phase 1 and Phase 3. In Phase 2, worksheets containing mathematical problems involving the values of generosity, justice, and friendship were used, as well as worksheets presenting these same values in an antagonistic form. During the discussion of the dilemmas presented within the scope of the proposed problems, the Piagetian Clinical Method was employed. Discussion sessions were conducted based on problematizing questions related to each moral value. At the end of the intervention phase, an activity was administered consisting of the individual resolution of three mathematical problems whose statements included the three moral values. The data were qualitatively analyzed in light of the literature on Moral Education and Mathematics Education, considering both mathematical performance and the moral justifications presented by the children. The results indicated that, throughout the investigative process, the participants expanded the quality of their moral arguments, demonstrating progressive shifts from justifications centered on obedience and external rules toward more autonomous forms of judgment, particularly when the situations were discussed collectively. Although mathematical performance remained relatively stable for most of the children, it was observed that engagement with moral content favored the explicit articulation of strategies, the sharing of reasoning, and the mobilization of mathematical procedures. It is concluded that the integration between moral practices and mathematical problem solving allowed for the articulated analysis of cognitive and moral processes within mathematics teaching. The findings indicated qualitative advances in moral argumentation, alongside stability in mathematical performance, which rules out a direct causal relationship. The research reinforces that moral education is constructed through action, interaction, and collective reflection, highlighting the relevance of pedagogical proposals that integrate mathematical content and moral values. | en |
