Abstract
The characterization and assessment of the natural vulnerability and the contamination risks of aquifers were made for outcropping units on the sub units of water resources management called Alto Aguapeí and Alto Peixe located in the western part of São Paulo State in Brazil. The results indicated that extreme classification vulnerabilities are restricted to the river plains of the two rivers, occupying 2% of the studied area, yet the High and High Low vulnerability part occupy 65% of the total area. The correlation of vulnerabilities with potential sources of contamination demonstrated that the gas stations and places of solid waste disposal have a high risk of groundwater contamination. The industrial activities have a high risk of contamination to the industrial districts of Garça and Marília and moderate risk for units in the food sector, located outside the districts. The results also indicate higher degree of diffuse risk to contamination groundwater in the cities with lower rates of wastewater collection, which is relevant the consideration of the concepts presented in the territorial management of those cities.
