Books and reading in Brazil: Development of science, technology, and innovation policies

Abstract

Given the crisis in the book publishing market and the fact that books are not a priority consumer product in the Country, the question arises what is being done to change this scenario regarding Science, Technology, and Innovation policies. The national context of books and reading and its relationship with Science, Technology and Innovation policies are analyzed, aiming to propose strategies in the context of the National Book and Reading Plan. A qualitative and quantitative, descriptive and documentary study was carried out. It was evident that there are flaws with regard to the Plan, as what is being proposed does not occur effectively. In the context of Society 5.0 and constant technological advances, Science, Technology and Innovation is seen as a facilitating tool beyond research and extension, as it can contribute to different innovations in the scenario of book and reading culture in Brazil that, in turn, contribute directly and indirectly to the country standing out in terms of innovation and in terms of meeting the Sustainable Development Goals, which can be measured through the Global Innovation Index.
