In Brazil, reading has been widely discussed, mainly due to the published results of national and international performance exams of Brazilian schoolchildren. Learning to read is therefore a continuous process, and the ability to make inferences while reading a text develops with age. The textual complexity involving the syntactic structuring, vocabulary and types of text progressively increases from the initial years of elementary school to high school students, also increasing the cognitive demand of the students; this occurs in parallel to their development and school advancement, which allows improvements in their teaching/learning processes. Based on the above, the following questions were raised: (1) How is the semantic process of reading established among elementary school students in elementary school (cycle II) and high school? Aim: to characterize the performance of elementary and senior high school students on semantic process tests from the Brazilian adaptation of the evaluation of reading processes (PROLEC-SE-R). Methods: A total of 436 students of both sexes, aged between 11 and 18 years, participated. They were evaluated with Assessment of Reading Processes-PROLEC-SE-R. Results and discussion: The results indicated that the semantic process was equally established among high school students, with a higher average performance compared with that of elementary school students. Among elementary school students, there was progression in the average correct answers with advancement in schooling. In the two levels of education, narrative texts allowed a greater number of correct answers, followed by multiple-choice and literal questions. The PROLEC-SE-R semantic process tests proved to be effective for assessing reading comprehension in elementary and high school students and reflected the Brazilian reality with regard to the gaps and weaknesses in the educational system.ItemArtigo Institutional repositories and knowledge organization: A bibliographic study from Library and Information Science(2023-01-01) Fujita, Mariângela Spotti Lopes ; Agustín-Lacruz, Carmen ; Tolare, Jéssica Beatriz ; Terra, Ana Lúcia ; Bueno-De-La-Fuente, Gema ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) ; University of Zaragoza ; University of CoimbraThis research presents an exploratory and descriptive study on the use of knowledge organization processes and systems in the context of repositories, published in journals indexed in databases between 2015 and 2020. The authors of these papers do not necessarily publish in specific events and journals in the Knowledge Organization area, but rather in the Library and Information Science arena. The study has been carried out in four steps: 1. Search, retrieval and selection of articles; 2. Development of a data codebook; 3. Identification and codification of topics; and, 4. Analysis of the data extracted. A final sample of 33 articles was defined. The methodology applied to determine the theme of journal articles is presented in detail, including the use of the Classification System for Knowledge Organization Literature (CSKOL). The illustrative data of disciplinarity and interdisciplinarity present in the articles object of this study are shown and discussed, regarding the predominance of certain ranges of CSKOL and regarding the diversity of the representative themes of the contents. It is possible to conclude that the use of CSKOL proves to be a suitable lens for analysing and understanding the literature on the field of knowledge organization in institutional repositories. It is shown that, in these 33 articles the themes of knowledge organization are combined with interdisciplinary themes from other areas of knowledge. In our opinion, this enriches and improves theoretical support for research development.ItemArtigo Cytogenotoxic evaluations of leaves and stems extracts of Rubus rosifolius in primary metabolically noncompetent cells(2023-01-01) de Quadros, Ana Paula Oliveira ; Baraldi, Isabel Bragança ; Petreanu, Marcel ; Niero, Rivaldo ; Mantovani, Mario Sergio ; De Mascarenhas Gaivão, Isabel O’Neill ; Maistro, Edson Luis ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) ; Vale do Itajaí University (UNIVALI) ; Universidade Estadual de Londrina (UEL) ; University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto DouroPlants with medicinal potential may also produce adverse effects in humans. This seems to be the case for the species Rubus rosifolius, where preliminary studies demonstrated genotoxic effects attributed to extracts obtained from leaves and stems of this plant using on HepG2/C3A human hepatoma cells as a model. Considering the beneficial properties of this plant as an antidiarrheal, analgesic, antimicrobial, and antihypertensive and its effects in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, the present study was developed with the aim of determining the cytotoxic and genotoxic potential of extracts of leaves and stems of R. rosifolius in primary without metabolic competence in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Cell viability analyses at concentrations of between 0.01 and 100 µg/ml of both extracts did not markedly affect cell viability. In contrast, assessment of the genotoxic potential using the comet assay demonstrated significant damage to DNA within PBMC from a concentration of 10 µg/ml in the stem extract, and a clastogenic/aneugenic response without cytokinesis-block proliferation index (CBPI) alterations at concentrations of 10, 20, or 100 µg/ml for both extracts. Under our experimental conditions, the data obtained demonstrated genotoxic and mutagenic effects attributed to extracts from leaves and stems of R. rosifolius in cells in the absence of hepatic metabolism.ItemArtigo Effects of a Competitive Season on Autonomic Heart Rate Modulation in Field Soccer Athletes(2019-01-01) Miranda, JOÃO MARCELO DE QUEIROZ ; Maia, Adriano Fortes ; Rica, Roberta Luksevicius ; Barbosa, Welmo Alcantara ; Souza, ALANA DE SENA ; Bergamin, Marco ; Valenti, Vitor Engracia ; Baker, Julien Steven ; Shimojo, Guilherme Lemos ; Prestes, Jonato ; Stone, Whitley J. ; Bocalini, Danilo S. ; Wichi, Rogério Brandão ; Universidade de São Paulo (USP) ; Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) ; Estacio de Sá University ; University of Padova (UP) ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) ; University of the West of Scotland ; Catholic University of Brasilia ; Western Kentucky University ; Universidade Federal de Sergipe (UFS)The physical demands of soccer combined with the rigor of the competitive season may have a substantial impact on autonomic modulation in field soccer athletes. The number of sudden death cases associated with soccer may be related to the physical training required to maintain performance and fitness, minimal time for recovery, and recurrent game participation. It is possible to identify individuals at risk of cardiovascular events by measuring heart rate variability (HRV), which is an indirect method for assessing autonomic activity. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze HRV before and after a period of field soccer competition. We evaluated 17 healthy male professional field soccer athletes and 12 untrained controls. The HRV was analyzed during supine rest before and after a period of field soccer competition. The following parameters were evaluated: interval R wave variation (RR), standard deviation of normal–normal intervals (SDNN), Root-mean-square successive difference (RMSSD), low frequency component (LF), high-frequency component (HF) and sympathovagal balance (LF/HF). Results indicated that the RR (p < .05, ES: 2.77), SDNN (p < .05, ES: 1.70), LF (p < .05, ES: 1.86), HF (p <.05, ES: 0.89) and LF/HF (p < .05, ES: 0.89) all decreased after the competition in the professional athletes with no change observed in the control group. In conclusion, the data suggest that a soccer competition negatively influences the autonomic regulation of heart rate.ItemArtigo Dialogues between sociocultural issues and knowledge organization systems(2022-07-01) Moreira, Walter ; Sabbag, Deise ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) ; Universidade de São Paulo (USP)The necessary ontological basis for knowledge organization systems (KOS) is structured on an epistemological basis and as is increasingly required in the context of critical knowledge organization studies, on a cultural basis. Thus, KOS must be discussed in terms of their social impacts, either directly or indirectly, visible, or not. The following questions are raised as general research problems: how to recognize and incorporate cultural diversity in KOS? How do recognize its applied dimension in the construction of documentary representations? KOS that are not inclusive fail in their fundamental purpose, which is the socialization of knowledge. The neglect of the cultural variables involved in the production and organization of knowledge makes the system oppressive or irrelevant, in both cases expendable. Thus, the objective is to understand the new requirements formulated for knowledge organization systems in accordance with the interests of the cultural perspective of knowledge organization. To do this, the construction of a critical-reflexive text based on the elements indicated by Hjørland and Pedersen (2005) and summarized in Hjørland (2008) as foundations for a classification theory is adopted as a methodological parameter. Thus, the ten principles listed by these authors are systematized into five dimensions of analysis related to the conception of the classificatory structure as a key component of KOS, they are: objectivity/subjectivity; ontological basis; sociocultural base; the domain as a guiding element; social effects of classification. It is concluded that the incorporation of cultural diversity into KOS requires attention to, at least, three elements that, although easily identifiable, prove to be extremely complex in their pragmatic aspect: a) the mapping and recognition of the different sociocultural perspectives through which a given concept can be observed; b) the incorporation of this diversity into the SOCs by making the classification structure that supports it more flexible; c) the explanation of the points of view adopted in the construction of the SOC.ItemArtigo Translation and cultural adaptation of the HELPS Reading Fluency Program into Brazilian Portuguese: A report of systematic adaptation processes and initial evidence of efficacy(2023-02-09) Martins, Maíra Anelli ; Begeny, John C. ; Capellini, Simone Aparecida ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) ; North Carolina State UniversityIntroduction: Across multiples languages, research demonstrates the important relationship between reading fluency and comprehension. Put simply, a fluent reader has greater attention and memory resources to use higher-order functions in reading, resulting in better comprehension of text. Some reading fluency interventions have shown positive results in improving students’ text reading fluency and comprehension; however, this research has predominantly been conducted with English-speaking students. For instance, until this report, a comprehensive search revealed only one prior study that evaluated an intervention strategy designed to improve students’ reading fluency in Brazilian Portuguese and no prior studies evaluated an intervention program with that population of students. Methods: The main goals of this two-part project were to (a) systematically translate, culturally adapt, and pilot test the Helping Early Literacy with Practice Strategies (HELPS) reading fluency program for use in Brazilian Portuguese (referred to as, HELPS-PB); and (b) conduct a preliminary quasi-experimental study of the HELPS-PB program with 23 students in grades 3 to 5 who needed a reading fluency intervention. Results and Discussion: This report documents the processes and successful adaptation of existing English- and Spanish-versions of HELPS into a new HELPS-PB program. It also offers preliminary evidence showing that students receiving HELPS-PB significantly improved their text reading fluency comparted to students in a control group. Implications for research, practice, and the adaptation of reading fluency programs into other languages are discussed.ItemArtigo Hybrid libraries and the development of society(2022-09-01) da Silva, Rafaela Carolina ; Caldas, Rosângela Formentini ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)Introduction: The distinctive and fundamental libraries' properties are changed over time, and some of these changes reflected in the nomenclature used to refer to the characteristics of the libraries. This is the case of the traditional and hybrid libraries. This research defends the thesis that hybridity paradigm for libraries stagnated in the 1990s, however, the library management changed, because of their communities' needs. Objective: It aimed to follow the sociocultural trajectory of the concept of hybrid library. Methodology: The study is qualitative, exploratory, and carried out a theoretical-epistemological and field research. It used the Multimodal Discourse Analysis as research method. The Bibliographic Research was used as a tool to collect data in specific and related Information Science databases. The Field Research was used as a tool to collect data in hybrid library environments placed in the State of Missouri, United States of America. Results: As partial results, was possible to identify that hybridity should be understood beyond its physical infrastructure, as a representative factor to develop communities. The concept of hybridity is inserted in the context of systemic organizations, presupposing an open environment action and administrative junctions, conjecturing micro and macro informational spaces. Conclusion: The hybridity promotes ways to use technology in favor of a collective intelligence, approaching knowledge networks, which can bring new perspectives to the libraries.ItemArtigo The free consumption of music on streaming platforms(2022-01-01) Novaes, Fernanda Carolina Pegoraro ; Moreira, Walter ; da Silva, Amanda Mendes ; de Oliveira, Alessandra Nunes ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)The 60's and 70's were marked by protests against the cultural industry, with music traffic through MP3. To destroy online piracy, streaming platforms have emerged, offering “free” music. With this in mind, the general objective of the present research is to reflect on how the consumption of music interferes with its own representation. To this end, the following specif-ic objectives were established: a) to gather bibliog-raphy on the theme “free music”; b) investigate how information science can benefit people through the Internet of Things; c) highlight capitalism generated in the music market and the main points about streaming platforms and music sales. It is concluded that every technological performance of music is marked by the interest of the market (which has influenced and continues to influence cultural choices).ItemArtigo Is Musical Auditory Stimulation Able to Influence the Recovery of Autonomic Modulation After Exercise?(2023-03-01) Gomes, Rayana Loch ; Ribeiro, Felipe ; Valenti, Vítor Engrácia ; Da Silva, Anne K. França ; Gonzaga, Luana Almeida ; Pérego, Sany Martins ; de Marco, Rafael Luiz ; Vanderlei, Luiz C. Marques ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)Context • The effects of musical auditory stimulation on the human body have received considerable interest, especially when related to health and wellbeing, so the objective was to verify the influence of classical music exposure on autonomic modulation in recovery after exercise. Methods • 35 healthy young men aged 21.74 ± 2.59 years were evaluated. Volunteers perform 2-day evaluations, 1 day without musical stimulus and 1 with musical stimulation through classical music during exercise and recovery. Physical exercises were performed on a treadmill with an intensity of 6.0 km/hr + 1% of inclination in the first 5 minutes for physical “warm-up”, followed by 25 minutes with an intensity equivalent to 60% of the maximum velocity (Vmax), with a same slope according to the Conconi’s threshold. Finally, the volunteers remain at rest for 60 minutes for recovery. Heart rate variability (HRV) was analyzed in some moments of recovery by linear (RMSSD, SDNN, LF and HF (milliseconds squared and normalized unit) and LF/HF ratio, RRtri, TINN and the Poincaré plot: SD1, SD2 and SD1/SD2) and nonlinear indexes (DFA Total, DFA Alpha 1 and Symbolic Analysis: Shannon’s Entropy, 0V%, 1V%, 2LV% and 2ULV%). Results • No differences were found in the comparison between the values of the HRV indexes between protocols and interaction moments vs protocols. Differences were observed between the moments for most indexes (P < .05). Conclusions • Classical music did not significantly influence the autonomic control of heart rate in the recovery phase after submaximal exercise.ItemArtigo Handwriting fluency, latency, and kinematic in Portuguese writing system: Pilot study with school children from 3rd to 5th grade(2023-01-12) Germano, Giseli Donadon ; Capellini, Simone Aparecida ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)Studies have referred to the interaction between orthographic and motor aspects during the production of handwriting. However, studies with Brazilian Portuguese are still lacking. Hence, the aim of this study was to compare orthographic regularity, based on the Portuguese writing system, in high (HF) and low (LF) frequency words, in relation to latency and kinematic variables in students from the 3rd to the 5th grade of elementary school. This is a cross-sectional pilot study, with a convenience sample of 95 children participated in this study, from 3rd to 5th grade level attending a state elementary school. All were submitted to the following procedures of computerized evaluation of handwriting and submitted to the task of writing 15 HF and 15 LF words, selected according to the frequency criteria and classified according writing coding rule. Results indicated that for HF words, there was a decrease in writing and disfluencies production time, for all coding rules, from 3rd to 5th grade. However, for LF words, the more unpredictable orthographic affect production duration time, movement fluency, and students became more dependent on the use of gaze to check spelling aspects. This study revealed that lexical and sub-lexical activation affected motor production. For HF and LF words, lexical and sublexical process favored motor programming. However, for LF words, despite the maturation and school progression for the motor planes, there was an increase in latency time and in the need to search for word information, measured by the gaze variable for words with greater irregularity. This study has provided some evidence that linguistic variables such as orthographic regularity and word familiarity affect handwriting performance in Brazilian Portuguese written language.ItemArtigo THE BRAZILIAN SO KNOWN AMONG US”: THE CIRCULATION OF LOURENÇO FILHO WORKS IN THE LIBRARIES OF MEXICO (1933 - 1963)(2022-01-01) do Nascimento Silva, Rony Rei ; Nery, Ana Clara Bortoleto ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)The text aims to analyze the circulation of the works of Lourenço Filho in Mexican libraries, in the period between 1933 and 1963. It is possible to affirm that the presence of these works in Mexico is indicative that they were part of the collections destined for the formation of normal schoolteachers, Primary Education leaders and school administrators, especially for offering readers principles of educational psychology, rural teacher training, experiences in Brazil and an overview of educational systems on a global scale. It can be concluded that the circulation of Lourenço Filho works in Mexican libraries is due to a network of relationships that he established with Mexican intellectuals, mediated by UNESCO and Crefal.ItemArtigo The indexing policy in the practices of Brazilian institutional repositories: A diagnostic study from the perception of managers and indexers(2023-01-01) Fujita, Mariângela Spotti Lopes ; Tartarotti, Roberta Cristina Dal’Evedove ; Dal’Evedove, Paula Regina ; Panuto, Jéssica Cristina ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) ; Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) ; Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar)Institutional repositories aim to gather, treat and disseminate information resources produced in a given institution. The adoption of an indexing policy aims to improve information retrieval by the user community of the institutional repository, by proposing elements that standardize the practices of librarians who work in subject cataloging. The objective of the research is to analyze the perception of managers and indexers of Brazilian institutional repositories about the indexing policy for information organization and representation, with the specific objectives of performing a compared evaluation of elements and variables (characteristics, processes, and instruments) of the indexing policy regarding indexing and retrieval, discussion of vocabulary control procedures, and obtaining an overview focusing on the perception of the need for an indexing policy in Brazilian institutional repositories. Semi-structured interviews were applied to nine participants from eight institutional repositories to investigate the requirements, elements and variables of the indexing policy in the practice of managers and librarians of institutional repositories. The results reveal the need for improvements in the practices of the analyzed institutional repositories regarding the activities of subject cataloging, standardization of subject metadata, and vocabulary control, queries, and in carrying out tests or trials for continuous evaluation of indexing and information retrieval with users. The study also revealed that this scenario can be more positive if institutional repositories adopt an indexing policy for the practices they perform in repositories to be understood by managers and librarians as a tool to improve information retrieval. La política de indización en las prácticas de los repositorios institucionales brasileños: un estudio de diagnóstico desde la percepción de gestores e indexadores.ItemArtigo Adaptation of an instrument to evaluate the impact of school libraries: study with the Student Learning Through Ohio School Libraries (OELMA) questionnaire(2022-01-01) Ferreira, Thaís Guedes ; Casarin, Helen de Castro Silva ; de Almeida, Cátia Candida ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)The impact of school libraries on student learning has not been systematically verified due to the lack of adequate tools, particularly in the national context. This study aims to adequate the instrument used in the Student Learning through Ohio School Libraries research of the Center for International Scholarship in School Libraries to the Brazilian reality about its content, structure of the questions, the level of complexity and language. After adjustments and translation of the questionnaire into Portuguese, validated by three judges, it was applied to three classes of a Brazilian elementary school. We analyzed the responses regarding the purpose of the questions and checked the records observing the children´s attitude during the application. Based on the results, a new version of the questionnaire was elaborated and applied to classes of 4th and 5th year of elementary school. The results showed that most of the doubts and problems related to the questions in the first version of the questionnaire were resolved and it was adequate to the current Brazilian reality, especially concerning the content. Large-complementary studies can check his adequacy and the possible need for other adjustments.ItemArtigo Psychology journals guidelines on title, abstract and keywords(2022-11-23) Terra, Ana Lúcia ; Agustín-Lacruz, Carmen ; Fujita, Mariângela Spotti Lopes ; Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra (UC) ; Universidad de Zaragoza ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)The aim of this exploratory study on the wording of the title, abstract and keywords of the articles is to verify and analyze the author’s guidelines in scientific journals of Psychology. The method used a combination of quantitative and qualitative techniques applied in a representative sample of journals in the area of Psychology indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), considering the first eight titles of each of the four quartiles. The sample consisted of 32 journals out of 77 (41.5%). A pre-adapted and tested spreadsheet was used. Data collection and processing was carried out on 38 items grouped into categories related to identification data, title guidelines, summary and keywords of the scientific article. The results reveal that the 32 magazine titles belong to 11 different publishers; all have some kind of style manual with guidelines that vary between complete and more superficial. Most have guidelines for drafting the title (75%, n. 24), abstract (96.8%, n. 31) and keywords (71.8% n. 23). The use of graphic and video abstracts are highlighted as new ways to disseminate the content of scientific articles. It is concluded that these aspects are aligned to a greater or lesser degree with the guidelines of the ISO standard and the APA manual. However, they are more related to the protocols of editorial management procedures for the dissemination of scientific work in a digital environment than to the intrinsic quality of documentary products associated with the organization and representation of Science.ItemArtigo Use of secondary cues in prosodic focus marking in speech of children with phonological disorder(2022-01-01) Soncin, Geovana ; Polli, Luiza ; Berti, Larissa Cristina ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)This paper presents an acoustic description of prosodic focus marking in speech of children with phonological disorder to identify which phonetic cues can be seen as markers of contrastive focus. The data was obtained in speech evaluation sessions through a task of repeating focus marking sentences. Duration, intensity and intonation on focused words were the phonetic cues under analysis. Results show that prosodic focus marking in speech of children with phonological disorder is characterized by increased duration and intensity, but is not characterized by the use of contrastive focus marking nuclear accent. These results are discussed considering, on one hand, the combination of phonetic cues relevant for characterizing the production of contrastive focus and, on the other hand, its clinical implications. We present contributions for both linguistic and clinical studies in language acquisitionItemArtigo Information Society and social media in the context of scientific communication(2022-01-01) Delbianco, Natalia Rodrigues ; Valentim, Marta Lígia Pomim ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)Introduction: The Information Society is based on the tripod “information”, “information technologies” and “telecommunications”, whose phenomena are studied by different scientific fields, including Information Science. This article intends to understand the impacts of called Information Society in the context of Scientific Communication. The main objective is to investigate how technological advances and the use of social media influenced the Metric Studies of Information in relation to Altmetrics. It discusses the Information Society, information and technology, presenting some data on social media and social networks. Method: It adopts a descriptive-exploratory approach of a qualitative nature, based on a literature review. Results: As a result, it considers that technological advances can be used both positively and negatively, but, in general, they help in the development of science and the sharing of information, because the channels used for such dissemination have been significantly expanded and, thus, resulted in the emergence of a new subfield of Metric Studies, aiming recisely to study the phenomena of these new channels of scientific dissemination. Conclusions: Finally, it understands that the development of science, based on technologies, especially communication through social media, causes Information Science to be in constant advanceAltmetrics being the result of the expansion of science communication in media considered as non-formal.ItemArtigo Obstructive sleep apnea and orofacial myofunctional aspects in obesity(2022-01-01) da Silva, Nathani Cristina ; da Silva, Giovanna Pietruci Junqueira Thomaz ; Onofri, Suely Mayumi Motonaga ; Pinato, Luciana ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the quality of sleep, presence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and its relationship with the presence of snoring, cephalometric characteristics, degree of collapse of the upper airways, and orofacial myofunctional profile in obese and overweight individuals. Methods: All participants completed polysomnography, as well as sleep and snoring questionnaires. We further performed orofacial, otorhinolaryngological, and anthropometric evaluations on all participants. Results: A total of 102 adults, comprising 29 obese, 21 overweight, and 52 eutrophic individuals of both sexes participated in this study. We observed a high prevalence of snoring in both obese and overweight (100%), and in 65% of eutrophic individuals. Among the obese subjects 58% had a severe degree of OSA, whereas 4% of eutrophic subjects presented a risk for OSA development. Sleep quality was related to body mass index (BMI) and cervical and abdominal circumference. All obese and overweight individuals presented with orofacial myofunctional alterations such as facial asymmetry, alteration of the maxilla-jaw relationship, inadequate tongue posture, changes in masticatory pattern and swallowing, and inadequate general orofacial myofunctional condition. Airway obstructions at the retropalatal and retrolingual levels > 75% were observed in at least 48% of the individuals. Conclusion: Obese and overweight individuals presented a higher risk for the development of OSA compared with eutrophic patients, and obese individuals presented a greater severity of OSA. The higher the BMI and greater the cervical and abdominal circumferences, the higher the prevalence of OSA, worse the quality of sleep, and more serious orofacial myofunctional characteristics in this population.ItemArtigo Efficacy of products for bleaching and whitening under orthodontic brackets(2022-01-01) Pinzan-Vercelino, Célia Regina Maio ; Lima, Suellen Nogueira Linares ; Pereira, Fernando Félix de Jesus Vieira ; Gurgel, Júlio de Araújo ; da SILVA, Gisele Rodrigues ; de FREITAS, Karina Maria Salvatore ; Centro Universitário Uningá ; Universidade Ceuma ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) ; Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (UFU)Introduction: Many patients wearing orthodontic appliances request alterations in the shade of their teeth during orthodontic treatment. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of different products for bleaching and whitening under orthodontic brackets. Methods: Seventy bovine incisors were randomly divided into five groups (n = 14): C) non-whitening toothpaste (control); WTsi) hydrated silica whitening tooth-paste; WThp) 2% hydrogen peroxide whitening toothpaste; OB) in-office bleaching; and HB) at-home bleaching. Two buccal surface areas were evaluated using the Easyshade spec-trophotometer: under the metal bracket (experimental) and around the bracket (control). The paired t-test, ANOVA, and Tukey tests were applied for statistical analysis. Results: In-tragroup comparisons showed that in groups C, WThp and HB, there were statistically significant differences in the enamel color changes (ΔEab) between under and around the bracket areas (C-under bracket = 7.97 ± 2.35, around bracket = 2.86 ± 0.81, p < 0.01; WThp-under bracket = 4.69 ± 2.98, around bracket = 2.05 ± 1.41, p < 0.01; HB-under bracket = 7.41 ± 2.89, around bracket: 9.86 ± 3.32, p = 0.02). Groups WTsi, OB and HB presented similar perception of tooth whiteness (ΔWID) between the tested areas. Intergroup comparisons demonstrated that under the bracket area, the color change (ΔEab) was similar for all groups, except WThp (C = 7.97 ± 2.35; WTsi = 8.54 ± 3.63; WThp = 4.69 ± 2.98; OB = 9.31 ± 4.32; HB = 7.41 ± 2.89; p < 0.01). Conclusions: The dental color changes were effective for the products tested in groups WTsi, OB and HB in the presence of metallic orthodontic brackets.
