Em busca do tesouro: adaptações de Treasure Island para quadrinhos da "Classics Illustrated"

Esta dissertação analisa três adaptações em histórias em quadrinhos do romance Treasure Island (1883), de Robert Louis Stevenson, publicadas na coleção “Classics Illustrated”. O objetivo do trabalho é compreender de que maneira a narrativa é reorganizada no processo de adaptação para o meio dos quadrinhos. Para isso, são estudadas três versões publicadas em momentos distintos por diferentes editoras: a de número 64, lançada pela editora Gilberton em 1949, a número 17, publicada pela First/Berkley em 1991 e, a mais recente, número 5, da Papercutz (2010). O trabalho considera tanto aspectos textuais quanto visuais das obras. Inicialmente, discute-se o contexto literário e cultural de Treasure Island e a sua relação com a tradição das narrativas de aventura marítima. Em seguida, examina-se o contexto editorial da coleção “Classics Illustrated”, a presença da obra nesse catálogo, assim como de que maneira o texto do romance foi adaptado para o meio sequencial. Por fim, são analisados elementos visuais das adaptações, como a organização dos quadros e requadros, o uso das cores e outros recursos característicos da linguagem quadrinística. A partir dessas observações, busca-se compreender como diferentes escolhas editoriais e narrativas contribuem para a circulação da obra em novos suportes e contextos culturais.

This dissertation analyzes three comic book adaptations of the novel Treasure Island (1883), by Robert Louis Stevenson, published in the “Classics Illustrated” collection. The objective of the study is to understand how the narrative is reorganized in the process of adaptation of the novel into the comics medium. To this end, three versions published at different moments by distinct publishers are examined: number 64, released by Gilberton in 1949; number 17, published by First/Berkley in 1991; and the most recent version, number 5, published by Papercutz in 2010. The study considers both textual and visual aspects of these works. Initially, the literary and cultural context of Treasure Island and its relationship with the tradition of maritime adventure narratives are discussed. Subsequently, the editorial context of the “Classics Illustrated” collection is examined, as well as the presence of the work in this catalogue and the way its text was transposed into the comics medium. Finally, visual elements of the adaptations are analyzed, such as the organization of panels and frames, the use of colours, and other resources characteristic of the language of comics. Based on these observations, the study seeks to understand how diverse editorial and narrative choices contribute to the circulation of the work in new media and cultural contexts.
