Resumo

This article describes the utilization of a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine, designed and developed on demand, whose main function is the manufacturing of anatomical and customized backrests through machining processes, using flexible foam blocks. It aims primarily to serve people with disabilities (PwD) who require postural stabilization and adjustment, such as individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) and other neurological disorders. The customization of assistive technologies (AT) can have a significant impact on the lives of PwD. Despite the availability of this service, mainly in specialized centers such as the Lucy Montoro Rehabilitation Network, the Association for the Assistance of Disabled Children, and the SARAH Network, the demand for this service is enormous, resulting in long waiting queues for PwD. In this context, this work contributes to providing PwD with greater availability of anatomical and customized backrests, consequently leading to improved postural comfort and better quality of life. Tests were conducted only with a 3D mold obtained from a preconceived three-dimensional anatomical model, without the acquisition process of a 3D mold from a wheelchair user. However, this test served to validate the manufacturing process and the capacity of the CNC machine used in machining foam blocks. Some improvements are still being made, such as adjustments to allow the CNC machine to have greater advancement in the Z-axis. The expectation is that the manufacturing of anatomical and customized backrests can significantly contribute to postural comfort and the improvement of PwD's quality of life.
