In 2004, the Stockholm Convention, an initiative of the United Nations Environment Programme, came into force in Brazil. Its aim is to protect human health and the environment from the harmful effects of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), which are highly prevalent in pesticides and industrial chemicals, with the ultimate goal of eliminating them. However, obstacles such as technical and financial limitations hinder the proper monitoring and elimination of these substances. This is exacerbated in Brazil by the fact that it is the world's largest consumer of pesticides, with 25% of plant-based foods showing high levels of pesticides or prohibited compounds, such as endosulfan and its isomeric metabolites, which are persistent, semi-volatile, and highly toxic. Therefore, detecting them even at the lowest concentrations is necessary, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) could be an alternative to enable the detection and monitoring of these substances. Because it is a fast and versatile technique that allows the identification of molecules by their vibrational modes, chemical species, and how they interact with each other and with the medium and which overcomes the detection obstacle due to the low cross-section of conventional Raman scattering, metallic nanoparticles and the surface plasmon resonance phenomenon are used to amplify the Raman signal. The objective of this study was the development and application of functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for the detection of the pesticides α-endosulfan and its metabolite endosulfan sulfate, using the SERS technique. The synthesis of the AuNPs was carried out by the Turkevich method, producing spherical particles with an average diameter of 17 nm, surface plasmon resonance at 520 nm, and electrostatic stability of up to 30 days. Analyses were performed to identify whether the presence of pure AuNPs would be sufficient to amplify the pesticide signal; however, considering the hydrophobic nature of POPs, it was necessary to functionalize the AuNPs with 1-dodecanethiol to create a lipophilic surface, favoring the selective adsorption of the analytes. The functionalization was confirmed by the increase in the radius of the nanoparticles, with uniform distribution in the colloidal dispersion; by transmission electron microscopy images; by the change in zeta potential; and by colloidal stability tests in the presence of salt, ultimately obtaining an amplified Raman signal, fulfilling the central objective of the study.
