Abstract

Constant changes in global markets are accompanied by increased competitiveness and economic and environmental uncertainties. These issues impact the expectations of stakeholders, who seek companies that offer products and services with increasing quality, respecting people and the ability to recover natural resources. This multiplicity of expectations has led companies to adopt several certifiable management systems, such as ISO 9001 quality management system, ISO 14001 environmental management system, ISO 45001 safety management system, among others. The Integrated Management System (IMS) makes management systems more effective by integrating common requirements of the various systems. Launched by ISO in 2012, Annex SL establishes a common structure for certifiable management systems that facilitate the process of integration, promoting greater compatibility between them. In the structure of Annex SL, new requirements were introduced such as the context of the organization, decision-making based on secure information and risk-based thinking. Among these, many companies have reported difficulties in developing the risk-based thinking approach in their IMSs. Therefore, the objective of this chapter is to propose recommendations for developing risk management in IMSs based on the identification of scientific opportunities and challenges. The recommendations were developed based on the challenges of implementing risk management in IMSs identified from the analysis of scientific texts in the Scopus database. The main academic contribution of this chapter is the deepening and expansion of the literature on the subject based on proposals for initiatives to overcome the challenges of integrating risk management into IMSs, creating a new block of knowledge on the subject that will help managers develop integrated risk management in their companies and serve as a basis for future research on the subject. Regarding the applied contribution, this work presents suggestions for actions to manage risks, which impact the perennially of companies and the sustainability of the planet.
