Revisão atualizada sobre o uso do flúor

Abstract

O flúor é uma substância usada em Odontologia desde o século XX e tornou-se obrigatória na década de 70, quando se iniciou a fluoretação da água e atualmente vem sendo também adicionado a diversos materiais como dentifrícios e materiais restauradores e cimentantes com o intuito de fortalecer a estrutura dental e prevenir a cárie. Contudo, há uma corrente de médicos e dentistas que contestam o possível excesso de flúor alegando causar sérios danos ao organismo. O objetivo deste trabalho será discorrer sobre a história do flúor, desde o início do seu uso na área da saúde, os locais que podem ser utilizados, sua concentração ideal, a relação custobenefício e as teorias que falam a favor e contra o seu uso. Foram realizadas pesquisas nos principais sites de busca de artigos científicos como Pubmed, Lilacs, Bireme, Scielo, Cochrane e Google Scholar, utilizando as palavras-chave fluorine, toxicity, fluoride poisoning e fluoridation. Para esta revisão foram selecionados 69 artigos.

Fluoride is a substance that has been used in dentistry since the 20th century, and became mandatory in the 1970s, when water fluoridation began, and is now also being added to various materials such as dentifrices, restorative and cementing materials in order to strengthen tooth structure and prevent caries. However, there is a current of doctors and dentists who contest the possible excess of fluoride, claiming that it causes serious damage to the body. This paper aims to discuss the history of fluoride, from the beginning of its use in health care, the places that it can be used, its ideal concentration, the cost-benefit ratio, and the theories that speak for and against it is use. The main search sites for scientific articles, such as Pubmed, Lilacs, Bireme, Scielo, Cochrane, and Google Scholar, were searched using the keywords fluorine, toxicity, fluoride poisoning, and fluoridation. For this review, 69 articles were selected.
