INFESTAÇÃO DO BICUDO DO ALGODOEIRO ANTHONOMUS GRANDIS BOHEMAN, 1843 (COLEOPTERA: CURCULIONIDAE) CORRELACIONADA A QUEDA DE BOTÕES FLORAIS EM CULTIVARES DE ALGODOEIRO*

Abstract

Research was conducted in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, at Dumont and Ituveravà county, during the 1995-1997 period, with the objective of evaluating the boll weevil Anthonomus grandis Boheman, 1843 infestation, correlating with cotton squares shedding. The experiment at Ituverava involved a 40-ha field of cotton and at Dumon.t the area of cotton field was 10 ha. The phenology of the cultivars was observed in 15 plants per cotton field, observing plant height, squares numbers, flowers and boll, during all cycles of culture. The relation between shedding of cotton squares with the damages of boll weevil were studied. The boll weevil infestation was evaluated by examining 100 squares and recording those with punctures. The results showed that shedding of cotton squares is not influenced by boll weevil infestation in either cultivar ('IAC-20' and 'IAC-22') in the beginning ofthe culture cycle. After 80 days of plant emergence, the squares production is reduced, the boll weevil infestation increases and the threshold is quickly reached, instead of the frequent insecticide application.

Pesquisas foram conduzidas nos municípios de Dumont e Ituverava, SP, no período de 1995-1997, com o objetivo de avaliar a infestação do bicudo Anthonomus grandis Boheman, 1843, correlacionada à queda de botões florais em dois cultivares de algodoeiro. Os experimentos foram conduzidos em Ituverava e Dumont, SP, respectivamente, sendo na primeira localidade com área de 40 ha e na segunda com 10 ha, por duas safras (95/96 e 96/97). As áreas não foram coincidentes nas duas safras, mas foram próximas. A fenologia da cultura foi observada em 15 plantas em cada área, onde observou-se a altura da planta, número de botões florais, flores e maçãs, durante todo o ciclo da cultura e a relação entre a queda de botões florais com os danos do bicudo nos botões florais. A infestação do bicudo foi avaliada pelo exame de 100 plantas inteiras (marcadas), anotando-se a porcentagem de botões florais danificados pela praga. Os resultados indicam que o shedding de botões florais nos dois cultivares de algodoeiro não é influenciado pela infestação do bicudo A. grandis no inicio do florescimento. A partir dos 80 dias após a emergência das plantas a emissão de botões florais/ planta diminui, a população de bicudos e sua infestação aumenta e o nível de controle é atingido mais rapidamente, apesar de freqüentes pulverizações com defensivos.
