Focusing on erotic fiction, this research analyzes orality markers contained in the translated dialogues of the erotic best-seller After, originally written as fanfiction (or fanfic) and published on the on-line platform Wattpad, in order to determine whether the use of such markers is aligned with the standard norm of the Portuguese language, or whether it is aligned with oralized constructions of Portuguese. Subsequently, the study formulates hypotheses regarding the translators’ choices based on the presence (or absence) of these markers, in comparison to the language of the fanfiction that originated the book - whose translation was made by the fans of the story themselves -, comparing the freedom granted by the publisher and the freedom offered on the internet. The study also illustrates how the book can be classified as erotic literature, using pornographic literature as a contrast. The theoretical framework comprises authors such as Britto (2012) and Preti (1987, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2012), who address issues regarding literary translation and orality markers; Amorim (2018a, 2018b, 2021, and 2022), who studies the representation of orality in translated best-sellers; and Moraes (1984 and 2003), Castello Branco (1984), and Maingueneau (2010), whose works discuss erotic literature and obscene lexical items. The research methodology is characterized by a quantitative analysis of orality markers present in the translated dialogues of the best-seller, using the software AntConc - a tool that aided in gathering the linguistic data analyzed - to identify and tally these markers. The software AntConc was used to identify and tally these markers, serving as a tool to assist in gathering the linguistic data analyzed. The analysis identified that the translators opted for a realistic recreation of orality in the fictional dialogue of the erotic best-seller, rather than systematically employing conservative language, as evidenced by the more pronounced use of markers of orality in the characters’ speech compared to the corresponding fanfiction; these features enabled the formulation of hypotheses regarding the influence of commercial processing on the book’s translation.
