The intensive use of systemic insecticides in modern agriculture has been associated with adverse effects on non-target organisms, particularly bees, which play a fundamental role in maintaining ecosystems and supporting agricultural production. Among these compounds, neonicotinoids have been widely questioned due to their sublethal and lethal impacts on Apis mellifera, which has driven the adoption of insecticides considered “safer” alternatives, such as sulfoxaflor. However, growing evidence indicates that the effects of this compound on bees are not yet fully elucidated. In this context, the first chapter of this thesis presents a systematic review of the scientific literature on the effects of sulfoxaflor on A. mellifera, addressing studies conducted at different levels of biological organization and employing distinct experimental designs. The results reveal that, although sulfoxaflor is often presented as an alternative to neonicotinoids, there are consistent reports of negative effects on bee mortality, metabolism, behavior, and gene expression, including at doses considered sublethal, highlighting significant knowledge gaps and limitations in current risk assessments. The second chapter experimentally investigates the effects of sulfoxaflor on the morphology of the hypopharyngeal and mandibular glands of Africanized A. mellifera worker bees in the nurse phase—structures essential for royal jelly production, chemical communication, and the social organization of the colony. Based on morphological analyses, the results do not indicate significant structural alterations associated with insecticide exposure, suggesting, within the scope of the analyzed variables, the absence of potential impacts on physiological development and functional performance of workers in this context. Taken together, the findings of this thesis reinforce that sulfoxaflor cannot be considered risk-free for A. mellifera, in light of the current scientific evidence. On the other hand, wax contamination at environmentally relevant levels does not pose a risk to the structural development of royal jelly–producing glands, potentially supporting the safe reuse of wax in beekeeping practices. These results contribute to the scientific and regulatory debate on insecticide use in agriculture, highlighting the urgency of management strategies that reconcile agricultural productivity with pollinator conservation.
