Abstract
The aim of this paper is to present the works of Evanildo Bechara as being marked by two fundamental traits: (i) a constant tendency to invoke (and defer to) the masters who ground his stances; (ii) a constant attention, coming from this foundation of deep grammatical knowledge, to what he labels as exemplariness in language. The analysis is carried out on articles published by Bechara in a collection named Na ponta da língua (Lucerna, 1998-2005). We conclude that, with a theoretical and methodological baggage comprising Philology and Linguistics, this traditional grammarian emerges as a cultivator of language, without adhering to a group of guardians of a linguistic standard to be prescriptively imposed.
