The tri-border region encompassing Brazil, Venezuela, and the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, particularly the Brazilian state of Roraima, constitutes a sociolinguistic space shaped by human mobility flows, the circulation of linguistic repertoires, and unequal access to communication. Within this context, deaf Venezuelan migrants engage in communicative practices involving contact between different sign languages and other semiotic resources, constructing intelligibility through interaction. Although research on migration, human mobility, and sign languages has expanded in recent decades, situated investigations into how intelligibility is constructed in contexts of language contact remain scarce. Addressing this gap, this thesis aimed to investigate the construction of intelligibility in interactions involving deaf Venezuelan migrants, focusing on the mobilization of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and Venezuelan Sign Language (LSV) within the multilingual sociolinguistic ecologies of Boa Vista, Roraima. The specific objectives were to: (i) describe the interactional practices of deaf Venezuelan migrants in situated communicative contexts; (ii) identify the linguistic and semiotic resources mobilized within their repertoires; (iii) analyze how intelligibility is constructed through interaction by means of these resources; and (iv) examine how asymmetric power relations shape the interactional negotiations through which deaf migrants construct intelligibility. The analysis draws on Interactional Sociolinguistics (Gumperz, 1982, 2001), Critical Linguistics (Blommaert, 2010; Blommaert & Rampton, 2011), and a translanguaging perspective (García, 2009; García & Li Wei, 2014), grounded in an understanding of language as situated social practice shaped by historical, social, and institutional relations. Methodologically, the study adopted a qualitative, ethnographically oriented approach informed by the principles of the Ethnography of Communication (Hymes, 1972). The corpus comprised semistructured and sociolinguistic interviews, video recordings, and field notes, which were organized and analyzed using ELAN software and through the development of ethnographic vignettes. The findings indicate that intelligibility is not a pre-existing condition of interaction but is constructed through ongoing negotiations in which interlocutors draw on resources from their repertoires in Libras, LSV, and other semiotic forms of meaning-making in situated and integrated ways. The analyses reveal translanguaging practices characterized by interactional adjustments, reformulations, and negotiations of meaning in contexts shaped by human mobility, institutional asymmetries, and unequal power relations. The study concludes that intelligibility is constituted through relationships between interlocutors and the situated mobilization of their repertoires, emerging as a relational, dynamic, and ongoing process that remains subject to adjustment and renegotiation as meanings are constructed. This research broadens our understanding of the language practices of deaf people in migratory contexts and underscores the need to move beyond monolingual models of communication by bringing together perspectives on sign languages, mobility, translanguaging, language policy, and the right to communication
