Ir ao encontro do desconhecido é, sobretudo, um ato de coragem; principalmente quando o destino está do outro lado do mundo. As relações entre Japão e Brasil são historicamente e simbolicamente marcadas pelo fluxo de migração no início do século XX. O presente trabalho recupera a trajetória do migrante japonês desde sua chegada no Brasil, em 1908, e suas vivências na nova terra até o período da Segunda Guerra Mundial, compreendendo o impacto dos momentos históricos e decisivos da época em suas vidas. Paralelamente, investigam-se as narrativas construídas em torno do ‘japonês’ e da imigração, de modo a entender as perspectivas das pesquisas e obras produzidas acerca do tema, considerando a influência do tempo e espaço na historiografia. Através de pesquisa bibliográfica, o trabalho visa demonstrar a divisão em fases ou gerações historiográficas sobre a imigração japonesa no Brasil, indicando as pautas e conceitos abordados pelos pesquisadores. Observa-se que a construção de uma história ‘oficial’ da imigração japonesa no Brasil (ou a sua possibilidade) se faz possível por meio da junção de diversos horizontes, desde que não haja uma seletividade narrativa e o enfoque em uma imagem supervalorizada e positiva do imigrante japonês.
Abstract (english)
To step into the unknown is above all an act of courage, especially when the destination is on the other side of the World. The relations between Japan and Brazil are historically and symbolically marked by the flow of migration at the beginning of the 20th century. The present work recounts the trajectory of the Japanese migrants since their arrival in Brazil in 1908, and their experiences in that new land until the Second World War period, understanding the impact of the historical and decisive moments of the time in their lives. Alongside this recollection, this study investigates the narratives built around the 'Japanese' figure and the process of immigration in order to understand the perspectives of the research and academic material produced on the subject, considering the influence of time and space on historiography. Through bibliographical research, this work aims to demonstrate the division of the Japanese immigration to Brazil into phases or historiographical generations, indicating the issues and concepts addressed by the researchers. It is observed that the construction of an 'official' history of Japanese immigration in Brazil (or its possibility) is possible through the combination of different horizons, as long as the selective narrative and the overvalued and positive image of the Japanese immigrant is left behind.
