Narrar a Grande Guerra (1914-1918): Alberto Rangel entre escritos íntimos, testemunho e história

Abstract

O século XX foi profundamente marcado pela Primeira Guerra Mundial (1914-1918). Compreendendo sua importância e suas consequências, muitos indivíduos se lançaram à escrita com intuito de registrar os acontecimentos da Grande Guerra e, a partir da produção resultante, muito se discutiu no campo historiográfico a respeito dos combates e dos testemunhos daqueles que foram impactados direta ou indiretamente por seus efeitos. Deste modo, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo investigar a percepção de Alberto do Rego Rangel (1871–1945) sobre a Grande Guerra que testemunhou enquanto viveu na França. Intelectual brasileiro vinculado ao Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro e ao Instituto Histórico Geográfico de São Paulo, experienciou diretamente o conflito, deixando por escrito suas reflexões e comentários acerca dos eventos, das situações que presenciou e daquilo que vivenciou. Tomando como base seu diário, suas correspondências e suas memórias, procuraremos analisar seu testemunho a fim de compreender como narrou e comentou a guerra. Considerando o caráter íntimo e pessoal identificado nos textos buscaremos examinar suas características específicas, bem como o papel do testemunho e sua relação com a escrita da história.

The 20th century was deeply marked by the First World War (1914-1918). Understanding its importance and its consequences, many individuals decide to write in order to register the events of the Great War and, from the resulting production, much has been discussed in the historiographical field about the combats and the testimonies of those who were directly or indirectly impacted by their effects. Thus, the present work aims to investigate Alberto do Rego Rangel's (1871–1945) perception of the Great War he witnessed while he lived in France. A Brazilian intellectual linked to the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro and the Instituto Histórico Geográfico de São Paulo, he directly experienced the conflict, writing his reflections and comments on the events, the situations he witnessed and what he experienced. Based on his diary, correspondences and memories, his testimony will be analyzed in order to understand how he narrated and commented on the war. Considering the intimate and personal nature of the texts he has written, we will seek to examine its specific characteristics, as well as the role of testimony and its relationship with the writing of history.
