Estado da arte: o "lugar" na dinâmica itinerante dos circos tradicionais

Abstract

O presente Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso investiga a abordagem geográfica “lugar” na dinâmica itinerante dos circos tradicionais, buscando compreender como esse contexto, enquanto modo de vida e prática cultural, produz formas singulares de territorialidade, pertencimento e identidade. Inserido na vertente da Geografia Cultural, o estudo propõe uma reflexão sobre a articulação entre o simbólico, o afetivo e o social, tomando o circo como expressão espacial das relações entre arte, trabalho e cotidiano. A análise revela que o circo, enquanto espaço itinerante, desafia as noções de fixidez e demonstra que o lugar não depende da permanência física, mas das relações sociais e da densidade simbólica tecida adjunta ao deslocamento. O espaço circense, como a lona, o picadeiro e os trailers, emerge como território efêmero e, ao mesmo tempo, repleto de espetáculo, sentimento e emoção. Nele se manifestam familiaridade, identidade e memória coletiva. A pesquisa dialoga com o percurso acadêmico do autor, marcado pela integração no projeto de extensão “Circunesp”, o qual proporcionou uma imersão prática e afetiva no universo circense, elucidando como a temática escolhida se estrutura a partir dos três pilares da Universidade. Conclui-se que o circo constitui uma metáfora potente para a compreensão do lugar no mundo contemporâneo: um espaço de criação simbólica e resistência cultural, no qual o humano se reconhece na arte, no trabalho e na vida em grupo. Assim, pensar o circo é pensar uma geografia do nomadismo, em que, mesmo com movimento e fluidez, é possível pertencer e se reconhecer no espaço.

This undergraduate thesis investigates the geographical approach of “place” within the itinerant dynamics of traditional circuses, seeking to understand how this context, as both a way of life and a cultural practice, produces unique forms of territoriality, belonging, and identity. Inserted in the field of Cultural Geography, the study proposes a reflection on the articulation between the symbolic, the affective, and the social, taking the circus as a spatial expression of the relationships between art, labor, and everyday life. The analysis reveals that the circus, as an itinerant space, challenges notions of fixity and demonstrates that place does not depend on physical permanence, but on social relations and the symbolic density woven alongside displacement. The circus space, such as the tent, the ring, and the trailers, emerges as an ephemeral yet meaningful territory, filled with spectacle, emotion, and sentiment. Within it, familiarity, identity, and collective memory are manifested. The research also dialogues with the author’s academic trajectory, marked by participation in the extension project “Circunesp,” which provided a practical and affective immersion in the circus universe, elucidating how the chosen theme is structured around the three foundational pillars of the University. It is concluded that the circus constitutes a powerful metaphor for understanding place in the contemporary world: a space of symbolic creation and cultural resistance in which the human being recognizes themselves in art, in labor, and in collective life. Thus, to think about the circus is to think about a geography of nomadism, in which, even amidst movement and fluidity, it is possible to belong and to recognize oneself within space.
