Resumo

Poly(furfuryl alcohol) (PFA) is a thermoset resin with wide application, ranging from adhesives to carbonaceous materials. This resin has been valued for being considered a bioresin and be relatively inexpensive. Although nanostructured composite obtained from PFA and carbon nanotubes (CNT) has already been reported in the literature, carbon/carbon composites processed with CNT has been little explored. Thus, this work has as main goal, the processing and characterization of carbon/carbon composites obtained from PFA and functionalized CNT. Due to the difficulty in CNT dispersion associated with an increase in the resin viscosity, the nanotubes were added during the synthesis of PFA. The use of nanotubes in situ and functionalized with furfuryl alcohol groups changed the polymerization reaction behavior acting as a catalyst. The composite PFA with different contents of carbon nanotubes (0.1, 0.5 and 1%, (wt)%) were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and termomechanical analysis (TMA). In the TGA, it was observed that both the furfuryl resin as nanostructured composites with at least two steps of decomposition, which showed two peaks of the derivative. The sample had a final furfuryl resin residue while 46% of nanostructured composites was increased between 49% and 53%, confirming the introduction of the CNT in the polymer matrix. For the DSC curves showed that the onset temperature of cure increases with the introduction of CNT, except for sample content of 1.0% CNT. The same behavior is observed for the peak temperature ranging from 84°C to 117°C, since the enthalpy is in the range of 156 J/g to 184 J/g, and again the composite with 1.0% CNT that is not observed. The values of enthalpy decrease with the increase of % CNT, suggesting the CNT ... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
