Throughout the world, it has been observed that mills face problems related to the quality control of different types of paper. In order to find a solution to these problems, a reliable methodology for the identification of chemical components associated with the formation of the spots in paper is required. In the present study, three samples of paper containing several spots were analyzed. The samples were extracted with dichloromethane and the corresponding extracts were analyzed via infrared spectroscopy (IR) and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results revealed that the formation of the spots is a consequence of the hydrolysis of the AKD sizing agent utilized in the papermaking process.en
