dc.description.abstract | Sustainable development has been a major focus of twenty-first-century research, and the world economy is undergoing profound changes, including the minimization and use of waste as well as the search for new materials to replace traditional sources derived from fossil fuels. Research on biofuels has made Brazil a pioneer in the production of ethanol and cachaca from sugarcane. After fermentation and distillation of the wort, vinasse is generated as a by-product. Vinasse is a toxic effluent that poses a potential hazard to surface and groundwater. This chapter discusses the treatment and application of vinasse, food industry, and waste management: biotechnological production and single cell protein (SCP) production. | en |
