Resumo

Cryptococcosis is a mycosis characterized by two main types of infections caused by yeasts Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii, being the first one of greater occurrence. C. neoformans has a wide geographical distribution, being isolated from excreta of urban pigeons, so that the presence of these birds in urban centers constitutes a risk to public health. This disease can affect several species, such as dogs, cats and man, but is not characterized as an anthropozoonosis, so that contact with sick animals is not enough to transmit the disease to humans. In addition, cryptococcosis can be fatal, especially in animals and immunocompromised individuals.
