João Goulart in the pages of O Estado de Mato Grosso (1961-1964)

Abstract

This paper aims to discuss the relations between the press and the civil-military coup of 1964. In the last few years, researchers have investigated practices and expedients used by the mainstream press to Erode the image of President Goulart, weaken his government and pave the military way to the power. On the other hand, few studies have dealt with the editorial position of newspapers produced in the Center-West region of Brazil. Therefore, this article aims to discuss the journalistic material produced about João Goulart and his government published by the newspaper O Estado de Mato Grosso between August 1961 and April 1964.
