A Transition Toward a Circular Economy: Insights from Brazilian National Policy on Solid Waste
(2022-01-01) Paes, Luís ; Bezerra, Barbara ; Deus, Rafael ; Jugend, Daniel ; Battistelle, Rosane ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) ; Faculdades Integradas de Jahu (FIJ)
This chapter discusses how the actual Brazilian National Policy on Solid Waste (BNPSW) - Law n. 12.305/2010 - aligns with the circular economy (CE) principles considering, especially, its potential to close the loop in solid waste production. This study’s emphasis is to recognize the main points to enable the CE with the aid of already existing Brazilian environmental policies, using tools as the waste hierarchy, reverse logistics, and shared postconsumer responsibility for a more efficient waste management. To contribute to this discussion, this chapter has set on four-part contributions: Part 1 begins by laying out a theoretical systematic understanding of how BNPSW contributes to the CE thinking implementation in Brazil. Part 2 presents and discusses all potential barriers to the adoption of solid waste management from a CE perspective. Part 3 develops a SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunities, and threats) analysis from BNPSW under a CE perspective. Finally, Part 4 presents a conclusion with the main findings and recommendations to assist the transition to CE in waste management legislation.

Organisational Challenges to Corporate Social Responsibility
(2019-01-01) Deus, Rafael Mattos ; Seles, Bruno Michel Roman Pais ; Vieira, Karina Rabelo Ogasawara ; Battistelle, Rosane Aparecida Gomes ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is part of the sustainability debate within organizations and, consequently, a number of systems to manage this issue have emerged. ISO 26000, for example, aims to assist organizations in contributing to sustainable development and employing international standards of behaviour. This type of standard is attractive, but there are some challenges that organizations need to face before adopting it. Considering these challenges, this chapter presents some characteristics of ISO 26000 and the main drivers and barriers to adopting CSR initiatives as well social standards. The literature is investigated to present important findings about CSR, social standards, and the drivers and barriers of CSR. The chapter presents in detail the main drivers toward CSR, e.g., stakeholder pressure, globalization, reputation, competitive advantage, decrease in risks around the business, government laws, improving the relationship between employees and the organization, improving the relationship between co-workers, compatibility with other standards, and company size. Just as there are drivers, there are also barriers to ISO implementation. The chapter also presents some of the barriers to the implementation of CSR systems and standards, e.g., lack of knowledge or awareness of CSR, lack of knowledge about how to implement CSR with the organization’s strategy, commercial barriers (national and international), lack of sensitivity to the theme, and financial resources. The barriers can be a challenge for organizational management. Organizations can use the tools presented by the standards and take advantage of the drivers, reinforcing their convictions and justifying their actions in order to implement CSR initiatives.

In this paper, analysis of the nonlinear dynamics responses of a structure equipped with a vehicle suspension that uses a fluid with magneto rheological characteristics to control the possible instability and chaotic motion. It is a spray orchards of tower type, with an unbalanced electric motor (Non-ideal) located at the top of the tower representing the concentrated mass of their fans, which represents the real system the best way possible. The simulations show that the MR suspension reduce the amplitude of oscillations of all the masses of the system, being the most important the mass of the cart and fans. The influence of the non- ideal motor is important to check the influence of a possible imbalance of fans.

Proposal for Integration of Circular Economy Within Product Portfolio Management
(2022-01-01) Jugend, Daniel ; Fiorini, Paula de Camargo ; Teles, Débora Amarante ; Armellini, Fabiano ; Pinheiro, Marco Antonio Paula ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) ; Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar) ; Polytechnique Montréal
Although current studies are pointing to the circular economy (CE) as one of the main trends for sustainable production and consumption systems, little is known about its applicability within new product development (NPD). In particular, there is a lack of studies connecting CE to product portfolio decision in early stages of the NPD process. Through a systematic literature review, this study aims to propose a framework that integrates CE practices and methods into product portfolio management (PPM). In combination with the well-known and traditional methods of PPM literature, the framework presented introduces the use of CE-based practices and methods to analyse the potential of product design concerning aspects such as durability, reuse, upgrading, remanufacturing, recyclability, recovery, and product service system. The proposed framework presents theoretical and managerial implications by sharing management methods and practices towards a product portfolio aligned with the principles of circularity.

Laterality and Usability: Biomechanical aspects in prehension strength
(2012-01-01) Paschoarelli, Luis Carlos ; Razza, Bruno Montanari ; Lúcio, Cristina do Carmo ; Ulson, José Alfredo Covolan ; Silva, Danilo Corrêa ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
Although technological developments in recent decades have improved the quality of life for many, a number of user interface problems still exist. There are difficulties, for example, manipulating manual instruments by those with specific needs, especially left-handed users. The design of such instruments depends on scientific knowledge of biomechanical forces - especially prehension. The aim of this study was to analyze biomechanical effort during simulated manual activities (compression, traction and torque with 14 different manual interfaces) between dominant and non-dominant hands. Sixty individuals (30 left-handed) participated in the study. Measurements were taken with an advanced force gauge and a static torque transducer. The results indicate that right-handed individuals perform better (p = 0.05) with the dominant hand (in 12 manuals interfaces), while there were no significant strength differences among the left-handed (except for two manual interfaces). The reasons why left-handed individuals present little difference in strength between the dominant and non-dominant hands are not clear, but could be the result of frequent use of the non-dominant hand to perform many instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs). Moreover, it could be due to greater symmetry in the organization of brain hemispheres compared to the strong lateralization of righthanded individuals. The results provide insight into the dynamics of the manipulation of a number of manual instruments according to right and left-handed groups.

Pulling strength with pinch grips: A variable for product design
(2012-01-01) Razza, Bruno Montanari ; Paschoarelli, Luis Carlos ; Silva, Danilo Corrêa ; Ulson, José Alfredo Covolan ; Lucio, Cristina do Carmo ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
Pulling with pinch grips is an action frequently used in either occupational or daily living activities, especially in situations where the object is too small, the access to the object is restricted, the use of tools is prevented and situations such as pulling strips out of long-life packaging, removing seals from flask lids, tearing a plastic bag, etc. Excessive demands of strength in those actions may limit the user’s access to certain activities and even lead to injury. The objective of this study was to collect valid data of pulling strength with pinch grips to be applied to the design of safer and more comfortable products and tasks. Three handles of different heights (1 mm, 20mm and 40mm) were used in the study and three types of pinch grips were measured with both hands: pinch-2, chuck pinch and lateral pinch. The study included 30 men and 30 women, all right-handed and healthy, and the maximum voluntary isometric contraction was measured in the standing posture. The results showed that the type of pinch grip used influenced more greatly the pulling strength than the size of the handles. This study provides biomechanical data of an action often performed in many daily living activities and also in several occupational tasks, but has been still little explored.

Optimization of minimum quantity lubrication in grinding with CBN wheels
    (2013-05-01) Bianchi, E. C. ; Aguiar, P. R. ; Canarim, R. C. ; Diniz, A. E. ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) ; Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP)
The application of minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) to metal machining has emerged as an alternative means to reduce cutting fluid usage, leading to cleaner production. In grinding, although MQL is considered to be progress regarding the environment, its application is restricted due to excessive heat generation and wheel clogging, which reduce final product quality and increase tool wear. This chapter reviews the research using MQL grinding aimed at improvements in terms of both wheel cleaning (by using an additional compressed air jet) and cutting fluid reduction (by adding water to the MQL oil). © 2013 Woodhead Publishing Limited All rights reserved.

Achieving environmental sustainability with ecodesign practices and tools for new product development
(2019-01-01) Jugend, Daniel ; Pinheiro, Marco Antonio Paula ; Luiz, João Victor Rojas ; Junior, Angelo Varandas ; Cauchick-Miguel, Paulo Augusto ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp) ; Universidade de São Paulo (USP) ; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC)
Ecodesign is recognized as the practice of reducing environmental impacts in the early phases of new product development (NPD) as well as the product life cycle. It contributes to the development of environmentally sustainable products (eco-friendly products) and thus to environmental sustainability. Nevertheless, studies have pointed out difficulties in adopting ecodesign for practitioners and scholars. To contribute to this subject, this chapter discusses ecodesign practices and tools from three NPD perspectives. The first emphasizes the importance of integrating ecodesign in the process of NPD and product portfolio decision-making. The second perspective deals with methods and tools that foster practical applications of ecodesign, such as environmental quality function deployment; the materials, energy, and toxicity matrix; and the ecodesign checklist. Third, predominant issues that motivate ecodesign are discussed in addition to some barriers to adopting it. This chapter also describes some examples of ecodesign research and applications in Brazilian companies.

Parameter optimization and active control of electromechanical suspension systems
(2018-01-01) Kuhnert, Willian Minnemann ; Silveira, Marcos ; Gonçalves, Paulo José Paupitz ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp)
This paper has as object of study a simplified model for the the automobile suspension system, which can become a regenerative system by coupling a RLC electric circuit to the mechanical system. The main objectives of this paper are to study and optimize a simplified electromechanical suspension model that, when in passive mode, harvests energy, while maintaining the handling stability and passenger comfort, and when in active mode, uses energy to improve comfort for passengers and handling stability with least effort. A multi-objective optimization procedure was carried out and Pareto frontier was obtained for the objective functions when considering the passive mode. When considering active control, changes were proposed to the optimal control in order to reduce control effort for feedforward strategy, while for feedback strategies, the stability gain range was obtained by Routh-Hurwitz criterion. The proposed control sets have particular advantages regarding isolation, energy harvested and control effort.

Impedance-based PZT transducer and fuzzy logic to detect damage in multi-point dressers
    (2019-01-01) Junior, Pedro O. ; D’Addona, Doriana M. ; Alexandre, Felipe A. ; Ruzzi, Rodrigo ; Aguiar, Paulo R. ; Baptista, Fabricio G. ; Bianchi, Eduardo C. ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp) ; University of Naples Federico II
Alternative techniques such as impedance-based lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducers has emerged as an innovative approach for manufacturing monitoring process, because its flexibility of using low-cost piezoelectric diaphragms and its simple methodology in terms of apparatus by using the electromechanical impedance (EMI). In addition, this technique has been under several improvements due to the advance of artificial intelligent systems. On this point, the use of fuzzy logic systems has been reported in literature as an attractive combination to improve the process performance. Therefore, this study proposes an approach to detect damage in multi-point dresser based on EMI technique incorporating a fuzzy logic system. To this end, a fuzzy model is built considering the information obtained from representative damage indices corresponding to the different damage cases that are generated at the dresser. At the end, authors expected that the dressing operation can be optimized, preventing the operation from being performed with worn or damaged dressers and ensuring quality standards and precision to the grinding process, which have a high benefit to the manufacturing chain.

Condition monitoring of structures under non-ideal excitation using low cost equipment
(2017-04-25) Paupitz Gonçalves, Paulo J. ; Silveira, Marcos ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp)
Monitoring the integrity of structures and machines is an evergrowing concern in engineering applications. Better knowledge of structural conditions allows optimized maintenance cycles, increasing the availability and return of investment, and preventing failure of various systems from manufacturing equipment to air and land vehicles. A common way of evaluating the integrity of mechanical systems is capturing and analyzing vibration signals during operation. Many of the condition monitoring systems are highly specialized, incurring high initial investment. In this context, the objective of this work is to demonstrate the possibility of using low-cost systems for monitoring the integrity of structures. The use of piezoelectric sensors to capture vibration signals is currently ubiquitous, and acquisition and conditioning of these signals can be performed by low cost and open source logic programmable microcontrollers such as Arduino. Structures coupled to non-ideal motors (such that the phenomenon of resonance capture can occur) are used in this study. Controlled structural modifications are performed by the addition of point masses along the length of the beam, and by the application of magnetomotive forces with the use of an electromagnet at a fixed point on the beam. The experimental data is compared to analytical and numerical results, and to an established commercial system, demonstrating the possibility of satisfactory monitoring of structural integrity with such system.

Innovative sustainable partnership between UNESP and a rural community: The bamboo project
(2014-01-01) Dos Reis Pereira, Marco Antônio ; Gomes Battistelle, Rosane Aparecida ; Chiappetta Jabbour, Charbel José ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp)
A successful partnership has been established between one of the most prestigious universities in Brazil, the São Paulo State University - UNESP, and a rural community located in the state of São Paulo, Bauru, Brazil. Within the ambit of this project, the farmers of this community, who are at constant social risk, receive training to enter the bamboo production chain. This training involves planting species of commercial interest, handling bamboo clumps to produce seedlings and stems, treatment and drying, in addition to techniques for processing, treatment and utilization in the construction of lightweight structures and for the production of artisanal and processed products, thus adding value to the material and providing a source of income for these families. This partnership resulted in several mutual benefits, e.g., the formation of a group of trained farmers, called the “Viverde Agroecological Association,” which can replicate this process by including new families in the project, as well as the establishment of partnerships to disseminate and support the project, and the training of UNESP students in product development and in scientific activities. This partnership project has received several awards for sustainability in Brazil, such as the 2009 Odebrecht Award for Contributions of Engineering to Sustainable Development, the University Outreach Award (UNISOL), the 2010 and 2011 Banco Santander Award, the 2010 ProExt/MEC Award (Brazilian Ministry of Education and Culture), and the 2013 3M Institute for Sustainable Development Award.

Using data envelopment analysis to construct human development index
(2016-09-12) Alves, Paulo Nocera ; Mariano, Enzo Barberio ; Do Nascimento Rebelatto, Daisy Aparecida ; Universidade de São Paulo (USP) ; Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp)
This chapter addresses problems related to methodological issues, such as data normalization, weighting schemes, and aggregation methods, encountered in the construction of composite indicators to measure socio-economic development and quality of life. It also addresses the use of several Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models to solve these problems. The models are discussed and applied in constructing a Human Development Index (HDI), derived from the most recent raw and normalized data, using arithmetic and geometric means to aggregate the indices. Issues related to data normalization and weighting schemes are emphasized. Kendall Correlation was applied to analyze the relationship between ranks obtained by DEA models and HDI. Recommendations regarding the advantages and disadvantages of using DEA models to construct HDI are offered.
