A singular modernidade romanesca das Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas: a consciência do trágico social e existencial

Abstract

A presente dissertação de mestrado busca estudar a modernidade de Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas, de Machado de Assis. Para esta finalidade, objetiva-se analisar a representação da consciência da condição trágica humana tanto no âmbito da questão existencial como no âmbito da questão social. Este será, portanto, nosso foco de análise na referida obra. No que diz respeito à consciência do trágico no âmbito social, pretende-se analisar também o romance machadiano Quincas Borba, a fim de identificar a relação entre as duas obras precisamente no que se refere à Filosofia do Humanitismo, que está diretamente ligada à construção da representação da consciência do trágico social. No entanto, antes de analisarmos o trágico na obra machadiana em questão, faz-se necessário entendermos o conceito de modernidade e homem moderno, a modernidade do gênero romance e a figura do herói trágico. Além disso, para entendermos o que constitui a modernidade machadiana como uma forma singular e desviante em relação aos padrões romanescos nacionais da época, pretende-se trabalhar com diferentes olhares críticos a fim de analisar os elementos que nos permitiriam afirmar o romance de Machado de Assis como verdadeiro fundador de nossa modernidade literária: o narrador, o tratamento da natureza, a representação do local e do universal.

This dissertation aims at studying the modernity of Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas Cubas, by Machado de Assis. For this purpose, it aims at analyzing the representation of the consciousness of the human tragic condition both regarding the existential context and the social context. This will, therefore, be our focus of analysis in this work. Concerning the consciousness of the tragic in the social context, we will also analyze Machado de Assis’s novel Quincas Borba, in order to identify the relation of the two works precisely in what it refers to the Philosophy of Humanitism, which is directly linked to the construction of the representation of the social tragic consciousness. However, before analyzing the tragic condition of mankind in Machado's work, it is necessary to understand the concept of modernity and modern man, the modernity of the novel genre and the tragic hero. Besides that, in order to understand Machado's modernity as a singular and different form in relation to the national novels patterns of the time, we intend to work with different critical analysis in order to analyze the elements that would allow us to affirm Machado de Assis’ novel as the true founder of our literary modernity: the narrator, the treatment of nature, the representation of the local and the universal.
