O Programa Agente Comunitário de Saúde (PACS) foi criado inicialmente na década de 90 em algumas regiões do nordeste, com o intuito de diminuir a taxa de mortalidade infantil, antes alta na região. A iniciativa visava à busca de alternativas, para melhorar as condições de saúde de suas comunidades, ou seja, criar um elo entre comunidade e a atenção básica, tendo em vista que o Agente Comunitário de Saúde (ACS) necessariamente deveria residir na mesma área de abrangência da comunidade atendida. Era uma nova categoria de trabalhadores, formada pela e para a própria comunidade, atuando e fazendo parte da saúde prestada nas localidades. O objetivo deste trabalho constitui-se em mostrar a importância do agente comunitário de saúde para o funcionamento dos serviços de saúde pública, sendo o principal responsável pela ampliação do vínculo da equipe de Saúde da Família (ESF) com a comunidade, e as dificuldades encontradas pelos profissionais. Foram consultados 23 artigos, buscando identificar as atribuições, e o modo que os Agentes Comunitários trabalham, facilitando o acesso à atenção básica de saúde.

The Community Health Agent Program (PACS) was initially created in the 1990s in some regions of the Northeast, with the aim of reducing the infant mortality rate, which was previously high in the region. The initiative aimed to search for alternatives, to improve the health conditions of their communities, that is, to create a link between community and primary care, considering that the Community Health Agent (CHA) must necessarily reside in the same area. scope of the community served. It was a new category of workers, formed by and for the community itself, working and being part of the health provided in the localities. The objective of this work is to show the importance of the community health agent for the functioning of public health services, being the main responsible for the expansion of the link between the Family Health team (FHS) and the community, and the difficulties encountered by professionals. 23 articles were consulted, seeking to identify the attributions, and the way that community agents work, facilitating access to basic health care.
