Na atualidade, novas configurações de família têm se apresentado, trazendo mudanças também para o exercício da parentalidade. Nesse cenário, a maternidade e os ideais que permeiam esta função passam a ser questionados e discutidos. Logo, apresenta-se como uma questão importante na atualidade estudar a história da maternidade, pois a compreensão da construção do valor do amor materno se liga a um percurso histórico e social que levou as mulheres a acreditarem no discurso de que toda mulher precisa ser uma boa mãe ou viver a maternidade – percurso este que atrelou a condição feminina à maternidade. Nesse percurso de construção e enraizamento do amor materno como um valor pessoal e social, a Psicanálise também apresentou discussões sobre o feminino e sua vinculação com o materno. Desse modo, esta pesquisa teve como objetivo compreender o que a Psicanálise apresenta sobre a maternidade, partindo de Freud, percorrendo a conferência de Margarete Hilferding, até chegar aos autores contemporâneos, como Nancy Chodorow, e como tais ideais compõem o ideal de maternidade presente na sociedade atual, a partir de uma interlocução entre Psicanálise e Literatura. Trata-se de uma pesquisa teórica em Psicanálise, em que buscamos pela interlocução entre Psicanálise e Literatura. O corpus de pesquisa foi constituído pelo romance Casa Vazias, da autora mexicana Brenda Navarro, cuja narrativa foi disparadora de reflexões, nos possibilitando a articulação das discussões históricas e psicanalíticas sobre a maternidade e apresentando como essas vozes literárias podem nos ajudar a refletir essas questões. Os resultados da pesquisa apontam para as possibilidades de uma maternidade com mais subjetividade para as mulheres, desviando das imposições já construídas e apresentando caminhos, através da literatura, que reafirmam que o instinto materno não é inato. Aposta-se na psicanálise como ferramenta que permite pensar diferentes percursos femininos, nos quais o desejo pela maternidade pode ou não estar presente.

Nowadays, new family configurations have emerged, also bringing changes to the exercise of parenthood. In this scenario, motherhood and the ideals that permeate this
function are being questioned and discussed. Therefore, studying the history of motherhood is an important issue today, since understanding the construction of the value
of maternal love is linked to a historical and social path that led women to believe in the discourse that every woman needs to be a good mother, or that she needs to experience motherhood, a path that linked the female condition to motherhood. In this path of construction and rooting of maternal love as a personal and social value, Psychoanalysis also presented discussions about the feminine and its connection with the maternal. Thus, this research aimed to understand what Psychoanalysis presents about motherhood, starting with Freud, going through Margarete Hilferding's lecture and up to contemporary authors, such as Nancy Chodorow, and how these ideals make up the ideal of motherhood present in today's society, based on an interlocution between Psychoanalysis and Literature. This is a theoretical research in Psychoanalysis, in which we seek the dialogue between Psychoanalysis and Literature. The research corpus was constituted by the novel “Empty Houses” by the Mexican author Brenda Navarro, which, based on its narrative, triggered reflections, allowing us to articulate historical and psychoanalytic discussions about motherhood and presenting how these literary voices can help us reflect on these issues. The results of the research point to the possibilities of a motherhood with more subjectivity for women, deviating from the impositions already constructed, and presenting paths, through literature, that reaffirm that the maternal instinct is not innate and betting on psychoanalysis, since it is what will allow us to think about different female paths, in which the desire for motherhood is present or not.
